We are a Buddhist centre in rural Yorkshire, England, comprised of a 180 acre estate nested within a British National Nature Reserve. The centre is part of a worldwide organization that helps make Buddhist teachings available throughout the world. We are a small resident and volunteer community that regularly hosts Buddhist teachers, seminars, and workshops. This is a space of retreat, where meditation practitioners can undertake retreats of a few days or a few months. Our resident lama is in residence throughout the summer and fall to provide guidance and inspiration.

We will be closing to volunteers mid November 2019 and will re-open March 2020.
Thank you for taking an interest and till next year ‘Tashi Dalek’

We partner with local and national conservationists and scientists to help care for our land, its unique variety of flora and fauna, and the surrounding moorland, which has undergone major revitalization efforts in the recent decades. A significant aspect of the centre is our dedication to developing environmental Buddhism within the UK.

The centre is an ideal place for anyone who is interested in learning about the teachings of the Buddha and meditation. Being a Buddhist is by no means a prerequisite to stay here--anyone who practices kindness and consideration of others, with an interest in selfless service, is welcome!

The summer and fall are our busy seasons, with many visitors coming for teachings and retreat. We are also in the midst of a multi-year expansion that includes construction of a large temple, new accommodation and dining facilities, and reception and teaching areas. There's lots to do!

We are currently looking for help in two primary areas: (1) building and construction and (2) general event support and housekeeping. Those with experience in or an aptitude for building and construction will help with our ongoing temple expansion project. Skills include carpentry, painting, drainage work, building brick paths, etc, jobs which can be learned in a day or two with a dose of enthusiasm. Familiarity with hand and power tools is a bonus. Those who are keen to work with our event support and housekeeping team will help prepare and run events, help out in the kitchen from time to time, and help with housekeeping chores such as laundry and bed making.

We ask that helpers provide 6 hours of work five days each week, with two days of rest.

Please note that the centre is extremely isolated. It is a large estate set within a much larger National Nature Reserve. Taxi rides to the nearest village take about 15 minutes and cost about 15 GBP each way, and we cannot currently provide rides into the village. So this is best suited to those who don't mind country living and solitary(not lonely!) times. As we are a meditation centre, this is an ideal place to practice in one's free time or begin to learn about contemplative practices. We have a splendid library of books about Buddhism, and teachers are in residence to provide guidance.

Residents and volunteers share our meals together, and teamwork is central to the workday. As we are a small resident community, helpers can expect to spend free time on their own, undertaking their own studies and reflection and enjoying the many walks around the estate and surrounding Nature Reserve.

Shared or single accommodation (depending on availability) with shared bathroom. We have lovely, warm rooms with beautiful views of the estate. Delicious vegetarian meals are prepared by the kitchen team and shared together in our dining hall. Helpers have a small fridge in which they can store personal snacks, though kitchen access for personal food preparation is not available.
