We are a Tibetan Buddhist Centre that welcomes HelpX volunteers interested in learning more about meditation, Buddhism & the spiritual life. Jobs are mainly cleaning & gardening. We offer accommodation in our caravan or dorm and free attendance at regular classes & meditations. Volunteers are responsible for their own food - but are welcome to also use the veggies in the veggie garden.
We are a Registered Charitable Trust and rely on volunteers and donations. We do not have a large budget and are unable to provide food money to short-term volunteers. This is really a place for those that wish to learn more about Buddhism, live in our community and offer service for a short period (1 - 3 weeks).
Living at a Buddhist Centre need to respect the Lay Buddhist Precepts during stay (ex. no killing, no lying, no stealing, no taking intoxicants, etc.) & be respectful of Centre residents. 4 good hours of work per day, 2 days off per week. Length of stay: minimum 1 week, maximum 3 weeks. We accept HelpX Volunteers from mid-February till mid-December. Minimum age 21 years old for HelpX Volunteers thank you!
Seeking hard-working couples (or enthusiastic singles) who are interested to experience life at a Buddhist centre, attend some introductory classes and otherwise be involved in life within the community.
If you are considering applying to be a HelpX volunteer here, please take a few minutes to read through our descriptions and arrangements listed below to see if it is a good fit for you. Thanks for your interest!
More About Us:
We are a Tibetan Buddhist Centre that offers introductory and intermediate level classes about Buddhism, Buddhist philosophy and practice. We also offer some meditation classes and retreats. We are home to a resident community of four Sangha (ordained monk and nuns) including our Resident Teacher Geshe Wangchen who is a monk and three nuns. We also have a lay resident community of long-term and short-term residents. We have a good Buddhist library, a Tibetan stupa and Prayer Wheel for World Peace all located on 2.5 acres along Oakley Creek with natural gardens.
Our HelpX Arrangement:
The minimum stay is one week up to a maximum of three weeks. We would prefer a stay of two to three weeks if possible. We request 4 good hours of service per day, 5 days a week (so two days off per week). We offer accommodation usually in our caravan at the moment, as well as free attendance for all regular classes & meditations. The caravan is a short walk (2 min) to the facilities (best to bring a flashlight). Also during the winter it can get cold so it is good to have warm clothes. The caravan comes with extra blankets and hot water bottles. HelpX volunteers are responsible for purchasing and preparing their own food. You are welcome to help yourself to veggies in the veggie garden. We do not have a central cook; everyone cooks for themselves here. Shops are close by and a central kitchen is available for your cooking (all pots, plates, cutlery, etc. provided). Volunteers share a kitchen, lounge and bathroom facilities with the lay resident community.
Everyone living at the Institute, including volunteers, are asked to respect the lay precepts during their stay (ex. no killing, no lying, no stealing, no taking intoxicants (including no drinking alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc. at all on the property), etc.) and be respectful of the resident community and visitors.
We are looking for couples at the moment, although enthusiastic singles can also apply. Please note that you may be the only HelpX volunteer(s) at the Institute at the time. If you are looking for a community of HelpX volunteers, this may not be the place for you. While we have an adult resident community at the Institute (approximately 9 lay residents and 4 ordained monk/nuns), we only have limited accommodation for HelpX volunteers. For this reason, we often only host one or two (if it is a couple) HelpX volunteers at a time due to current accommodation limitations. There are sometimes exceptions to this.
We are located in Auckland, in the suburb of Avondale. We are close to bus and train transport (a walk of 6 - 15 minutes depending on the stop). We are also close to shops - Dairy two blocks away, PacnSave 15 - 20 minute walk away, or by car about five minutes. If you have a car, you can drive to downtown Queen Street in approximately 15 - 20 minutes, otherwise by public bus it is approximately 35 - 45 minutes.
Qualities We Appreciate:
We appreciate HelpX volunteers who are hard-working, honest, can take direction but also work independently. We need volunteers who are flexible regarding the type of work they are willing to do. The work we have can benefit from people with skill at gardening, weeding, landscaping, detailed and general cleaning, painting, and sometimes baking and cooking. Sometimes there are other jobs as well, so please let us know if you have the above skills or other skills.
Also we give priority to those who are interested to attend introductory classes and other programs that our Institute offers (free for HelpX volunteers), as this is the primary purpose of our Institute.
Mature, Respectful and Considerate HelpX Volunteers Wanted:
We are looking for mature HelpX volunteers (minimum age 21 years old) who are considerate and mindful of others when living in a community setting. We have a group of long-term mature residents that share their cooking and living spaces with HelpX volunteers and we find this works only if volunteers are respectful and considerate. For example, not taking over shared spaces, but instead being mindful of the needs of others as well and creating space so everyone can use shared spaces.
When You Write to Us:
If this arrangement suits you, and you would like to apply, please send us a message through the HelpX website. Be sure to let us know your skills (especially your gardening experience, cleaning, cooking and painting skills, etc.) and WHY you would like to be a HelpX volunteer here.
