I'm your host, Tessa and I'd like to welcome you to our place. Our beautiful Yellowknife, NWT home is perched atop Old Town’s Latham Island, overlooking Great Slave Lake and the best aurora (northern lights) in the world! Relax by the fireplace or out on the deck, enjoy simple living at our pleasant ‘home-stay’ with casual atmosphere and eclectic northern decor.

Myself and my husband Mike are long time northerners. I'm a free-lance photographer, most recently working on a series of children's books about Northern Peoples. Mike owns and operates a wilderness tourist lodge. It’s a great way to really meet the North - with people who have lived here for 40 years! We have the pleasure of being in the hospitality business for 25 plus years.

The place is located in charming Old Town area near hiking and biking trails and just a minute from the lake shore’s public park. Perfectly located, we are several minutes walk from northern style restaurants, intriguing gift shops, boat and air charters and playgrounds. Experience breath-taking aurora viewing right from our quiet neighborhood. Join us for warm summers with the long days of the midnight sun. Depending on the season you can try x-country ski, skate, snowshoe, hike, bike, swim, canoe, kayak or fish!

The property itself has three guest rooms and hosts people from all over the world especially those interested in seeing aurora- the northern lights! We provide to our guests a comfortable and cozy places to stay, satisfying full breakfasts, common living and dining rooms, a small northern library of books, videos etc. The master bedroom and guests rooms are upstairs. Bathroom, kitchen, living and dining are on the main floor. On the lower level, volunteers will have their own bedroom. This is a very nice furnished room with a double bed, seating area, window, mirrors, lots of space, etc. There is no one else living on the basement level, so it is quite a private space. There is a separate entrance to the basement and a shared bathroom is just at the top of the stairs. Laundry machines are available for your use. There is a wifi connection but it is limited to basic usage, not streaming or videos. There is cell phone reception in Yellowknife. If you need winter clothing for your stay, please let us know in advance and we can help arrange this.

We ask for helpers who can exchange 4 hours a day, 5 days a week in trade for a great place to stay, tasty food, and living a northern experience under the aurora. We can rearrange the working schedule to suit both of our needs when you get here. We require a minimum of a 6 week stay.

We offer you the chance to help out where you can use skills you might have and learn new ones too! We would like help with general housekeeping and odd jobs most of the time. Some of your help might include cleaning the kitchen, making beds, doing laundry, dusting, vacuuming, cooking etc. Other kinds of jobs can include loading firewood, chopping wood, cutting kindling, shoveling snow, repairs, fix its, organizing and much more. We also have opportunities for those experienced in summer gardening, house painting, fixing furniture, making rock paths, sewing, etc. There is never a dull moment, always something happening, plus we may have fun projects that come up while you are here.

We expect volunteers to be mature, clean, organized, friendly, polite, respectful and have a positive manner with us, and for any guests that we might have around. You may be be cooking for our guests and for us together as helpers and family. You will be provided with training for all jobs that need to be done. Feel free to let us know skills and talents that you have that you could help us with!

Being a volunteer at the is a fantastic, truly Canadian experience. Yellowknife is a unique town in the Northwest Territories with so much to see, do, and learn. We have a real understanding of northern living, ways and practices. With skills to learn and share, volunteering here is an opportunity to get to know us, building and improving your talents, improving your English language skills, meeting guests from all around the world, and living the dream of what the North has to offer. Volunteers are encouraged to get out and do as much as they can during their stay here. Not to mention the simple benefits of a fun, friendly, cozy place to call home on your travels.

Please note that you will need to have medical/travel insurance coverage if you want to come and volunteer with us!
