Arohanui Community was born in 1975 when a group of young friends including my father and uncle got together and bought this land to start a community of like minded people, in that first period they built the communal house we call the A-frame, established big gardens, planted fruit trees and had dreams of more communal space such as yoga studios and library but as the people had different ideas and focus in there lives they mostly left the Island.

My partner and I are now living on the land, and making it our home, and inviting like minded traveller's to experience our lifestyle.

We are now full swing into a new and exciting alternative, eco building project. We are building our dream home out of mud brick, milled timber from the island and other recycled materials. Post and beam structure, passive solar design with green roof's and off grid systems. For this project we are requesting enthusiastic practical people to get involved preferably with some building experience or ... more inside

We currently have no availability.

In between doing beautiful hikes, surfing our uncrowded waves or wandering along empty beaches, we would love your help assisting with garden work, cleaning and creating fun adventures with our son.

We are a family who love the outdoors and our alternative lifestyle here on Great Barrier Island. We live in a house that is completely off the grid and runs 100% on solar power. Our water comes directly from the sky or from the stream, we have a big vegetable patch and most of our meat and fish comes from the island's land and sea.

Andy is a builder and Deborah runs a stargazing tour company. In our spare time we fish, dive, surf, garden or play on the beach with our son.

We moved into this property in March 2017 after spending a year renovating (thanks to all the help from wonderful helpXers). But there's always help required, so get in touch!

In exchange for 5 hours work a day, 5 days a week, plus general helping out (like doing the... more inside

Overlooks Medlands surf Beach.
Great beach for walking, fishing, thinking, swimming and surfing.
We supply the food and you cook for yourselves.
If you have any special food requirements you would have to bring them with you.
Would help if you could work independently. We have lots of gardening to do.
We are looking for a couple of mature guys or a couple that have an understanding and love of gardening and we would also need some cleaning help. Am also interested in people with painting experience.
You would do 5 hours a day and weekends off.
At the moment we are looking for someone who can do weedeating, strimming and scrubcutting. We have a bank which needs a lot of tidying up. Not flash work but will get you fit for summer!!

There is also a horse in our bottom paddock that needs breaking in so if anybody has those sort of skills. He is six? years old and lovely but has no manners as the woman that owns him is scared of him. All that is needed is that we can lead... more inside

I.m looking for self responsible, happy easy going persons or couples who are interested in helping to make gardens, keeping the fires going and generally living the life!! A minimum of two weeks stay because it takes a while to tune in and become really useful. Something like four hours of work a day for your food and accommodation but I like to keep things flexible so you can enjoy day away adventures. I would like to do a lot more sailing this summer so if you would like to go sailing, all the better!
The homestead is on a bluff overlooking the sea and a bush clad valley on the coast of Aotea ( Great Barrier Island which is a four and a half hour ferry ride from Wynyard wharf and the noise of downtown Auckland.) An adventure in it self.
Self sufficiency is practiced as much as we are able.. Eating from the garden and home baked bread from the woodfired oven. .Am interested in hearing from able people or couples who would like to experience a nature retreat.. Be in touch if thi... more inside

We live on a large lifestyle bock, mostly in native bush with our food systems growing amongst it. We value a clean environment and minimal waste and living with a small footprint.
Being off grid and water conscious are two constant factors to be mindful of.
I am a home based artist with a pottery studio and family life combined. My studio has gas and wood fired kilns and a small gallery out the front.
We like hosting independent, practical, resourceful types who immerse into the lifestyle on the Barrier.
The type of work depends on what projects are going on at the time....maintenance, gardening, building, cleaning, firewood etc I like to tap into peoples strengths and interests to determine what sort of thing suits them best.
Your accommodation is a cozy caravan separate from the family dwelling. We share meals and tasks after the work is done. 4 hours work is exchanged for food and bed.

Kia Ora!

***Seeking helpers for January***

We are a family of 6 with four children under 8. We are homeschooling / unschooling our beautiful children and wish for them to meet people from all over the world. You will be warmly welcomed into our bustling, creative and caring home.

We are seeking helpers for assistance with household chores, child care and gardening. Prefer a solo female helper, but would consider a couple that think they could help!

You will have your own private sleep out accomodation with a comfy queen sized bed, and simple cooking facilities (see the room in photo 6, it is below our deck in photo 5). You will have your own toilet, but will need to share our bathroom. Our home is at the top of a 3 minute walking track, surrounded by ancient pohutukawa trees with stunning views over the ocean. We are situated in the heart of Tryphena, within walking distance to beaches, shops, cafes and pubs.

Here we live in harmony with the seasons, the land, sea and... more inside

Volunteering and Internships!

We have a couple of vacancies for a volunteer starting around the 29th January 2019 (2 month minimum stay)

We run a small scale intensive market garden, nursery and orchard on Great Barrier Island, operating according to organic/biological principles.

We grow a very wide range of high quality produce including fruit, vegetables and herbs. 95% of our produce stays here. Truly local food. Our small but busy nursery grows a wide range of seedlings for local gardeners.

Our produce is available at a weekly Saturday market at Stonewall Village in Tryphena, and via a fruit/vege box service for locals and visitors almost year round. We also supply local cafes and restaurants.

There is no mains power out here so we rely on solar panels, batteries and a generator. We have no TV but we do have WiFi Internet (limited), and lots of board games. Volunteers need to be self sufficient and able to entertain themselves, preferably in the great out... more inside

Sorry we are booked out until March 2019

Great Barrier Island is a remote, stunningly beautiful Island about 100 km's East of Auckland. Excellent tramping, beaches, surfing, fishing and kayaking

We (husband and wife) live in a large architecturally designed house on 4 hectares of land overlooking Tryphena Harbour
We have a large garden - both ornamental and vegetables from which we eat. While not totally organic we try to use organic techniques to grow our food
We have a small boat and always need encouragement to take time off and go fishing.
We always have masses of projects going on, as we attempt to be as self sufficient as possible - without losing out on the luxuries of life. Our projects projects include gardening, building, websites and making papercrete building blocks etc etc
Great Barrier Island has no reticulated power or water. So we have 8 solar panels, which provide most of our power. Our water is from a spring (imagine water that has been filtered for tho... more inside
