We farm 820 hectares in Mid Canterbury which include growing crops (grass, wheat, linseed, brassicas, peas, red beet, hemp etc) along with having sheep, bulls and graze dairy heifers just outside of Ashburton, approx. 1.20 hours south of Christchurch.

While our farm is spread over two properties (one with approx. 2km of coastline), we live 9kms off the main road (happy to pick up from Ashburton Information Centre). While our house (in which your accommodation is in) is 6 years old, it was built within an established large garden area with a pond.

We are a couple in our early 50's which three grown up children (living away from home but nearby). Tilly is our springer spaniel, Archie the cat, chickens and pet sheep. Hilary and I live in a 3 bedroom strawbale house which , with the help of family, friends and HelpX we built over 3 day week-ends for three years. The house is on just over 6 hectares and has sheep, goats, honey bees, native tree plantings, an orchard, soft fruits and nut trees.
We grow and make as much of our own food as possible; bread, cakes, pickles, yoghurt and jams are created in the kitchen, vegetables and fruit come out of the garden and meat comes from our animals.
We are looking for Helpx guests who are interested in and want to be involved in sustainable living, creating their own buildings, permaculture, etc. We are happy to help you with this journey. We would love you to have some skills in digging, weeding, building etc.

The house is 16 km west of Geraldine with views to the mountains [the Four Peaks] and the sea.
South Canterbury is great for walking and biking, with lovely nearby native forests and mountains [check out the DOC web site]. The coast is 40 mi... more inside

AVAILABLE ONLY - Our Peel Forest hut on our small farm is available for travellers in need of accommodation. In return for a few hours work a day we offer food and a gorgeous little self contained accomodation.
This place is 15km away from our own home and family, and currently we will are not able to host travellers here with us.
Tasks will include cutting vines off trees, planting native trees, spraying weeds, cutting firewood if experienced, other similar jobs.

The place has a log burner fire, a large kitchen and lounge, a gas fridge, a gas cooker, a long drop toilet and a cosy bedroom with a double bed and a single bed. It is basic but really comfortable. We have hosted many people there. The area is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to do in Peel Forest.

After having a break from Helpx for over a year, we are back looking for awesome helpers. xxx

We're redesigning our whole property to a permaculture food forest, could use an extra pair of hands to plant trees and make new beds. Best to send us a text or call our homeline. We don't check e-mails daily.

We're a couple in our 30's with a 3 year old, living on a small lifestyle block. The house is on top of a hill overlooking Esk Valley all the way to the sea and mountains around the back. The views are absolutely stunning and it's very peaceful place out in the country 30km from Timaru. In only one hour and a bit you can be at lake Tekapo. Some great bushwalks and rivers are not far and the beach is only 10 minutes down the valley! Best if you have your own transport.

We're expanding and maintain a big garden and grow a variety of vegetables, herbs and fruit trees. 3 very friendly goats always love a treat from the garden and we have a dog full of energy. Our goal is to transform our land into an edible, self-sufficient and sustainable paradise we are very enthusiasti... more inside
