A "Natural" Building Project in the Scottish Highlands.

Hi HelpXers,

We are looking for help from April 2020 onwards.

We live in a beautiful wooded glen (valley) near a village called Spinningdale about 50 miles (80 km.) north of Inverness in the northern Scottish Highlands, where we have a 6 acre (2.4 hectare) former croft (a "croft" is a traditional small Highland farmstead).

We are surrounded by 1700 acres (700 hectares) of stunning natural woodland belonging to a conservation body called The Woodland Trust. We help look after the woods as Voluntary Wardens.

Jim is an environmental scientist with a particular interest in ecological design and sustainable building using natural materials. Saddhavati is an artist and teacher.

We are nearing completion of our "natural" home. It is a "passive solar" design based around a traditional post and beam timber frame with "breathing" external walls clad with untreated larch and a living green roof. The building is insul... more inside

What are your plans for 2020? We now have volunteers until later in the summer but we shall still need some extra assistance for both the holiday cottages and in the garden to welcome our visitors from mid-July onwards

We are in the Highlands of Scotland near the Isle of Skye. We hope to hear from you.

Do you want to explore the Isle of Skye and the North West Highlands? Attadale would suit either two friends or a couple as space is limited. Ideally for a minimum of three weeks, preferably one month please. Last year we had at least three volunteers returning for a second time, which must be a recommendation! Check out their reviews below.

Beautiful estate with large garden open to the public and four holiday cottages situated in wild country near the Isle of Skye. Garden open from April to October. Holiday cottages available for visitors from March.

We moved to the Highlands of Scotland in March 2018, with our two dogs, Harry and Tess, and have been working since then to renovate and extend a rather boring bunglaow, stunningly located on the shore of Loch Garry, turning it into a comfortable, more environmentally friendly and attractive home. We are both retired and volunteer locally ourselves at the Community Woodland, organising the local Highland Games, on the board of Lochaber Environmental Group, West Highland College and Citizens Advice Bureau, and Andrew is a member of the local Community Council.
Our home is located on the shores of a loch (lake) in a quiet glen (valley) with mountain views all around.
We are both committed to living in an environmentally friendly style. We want to increase the amount of food we produce ourselves, experiment with re-using as much material as we can, and building in low impact ways, using Andrew's engineering skills.
We enjoy off road running (Ross) meditation (Andrew) walking, cyc... more inside

Outdoor and indoor opportunities in beautiful surroundings with friendly people!

Pursue your interests and talents - we'll come up with some projects suited to you: your head and/or hands. Lots of work in the woods, on the mountain bike trails, maintenance, creative stuff, video/photography. Possibly eco-building, tree-planting, helping with the campsite. It all depends what you enjoy and/or have experience in. We no longer ask volunteers to help with cleaning/house-keeping, but paid house-keeping shifts may be available.

Come with a friend or partner or come alone. We have attractive private accommodation in a large mobile home, no bills, free wifi and use of bikes. Some free food and a weekly food allowance (£30). Sadly we can't cook! We ask for 20 hrs volunteering per week usually spread over 5 days with two days off (this is flexible).
