We are looking for helpers starting in September. Thanks for checking us out!

Our farm is situated in the rolling hills of Northumberland County, 10 minutes north of Cobourg. The view is magnificent and the gardens are gorgeous.
We have many projects on the farm including a vegetable garden that supports 4 families. We will be building decks onto the straw bale house. This summer we are involved in a different project from our usual. Ten years ago we lost our barn, which burned to the ground. This has made it extremely challenging to manufacture earth blocks and to keep our lumber piles dry. Two summers ago we dismantled a steel post and beam barn and moved it to the farm. Now that our jumbo straw bale house is almost completed (the decks still need to be made) we will be rebuilding the barn. Although we prefer to have helpers come with some history building and carpentry, most important is an eagerness for hands on work.

We have developed a compressed earth block and straw ... more inside

Gardening, forestry
We live in a small cottage on a friendly lake about 3 hours north of Toronto.
We have the usual cottage toys available, canoe, small sailboat, row boat. Looking for help with selective cutting trees for firewood and lumber which we cut on our own small mill. Hopefully someone that is a better gardener than we are as we would like to start growing our own produce and maybe even get some chickens. Help with some construction and painting projects. We have some old machinery we are always trying to keep running. We are offering free accommodation and meals in exchange for help.
This is a no smoking environment.

.January, 2019.
Time to start thinking about the post Winter & Spring opening routines- maple syrup production , branch and debris clean-up, field burning, the pool, the garden, the underground water systems and machinery maintenance, fence-rows and roadside clearing. Lots of trimming and finishing in the recently built GREAT ROOM extension with farm grown, felled and milled wood.
No pics of snow blowing after a monster storm, no pics of maple syrup production, of the vegetable garden, of the many flower beds to be kept, of the wide expanse of lawns to mow, of weed whacking, forest management and maintenance, the portable saw-mill, the summer cottage, rhubarb chutney processing, the asparagus bed, the apple harvest, and no pics of the fitness room trampoline or the five workshops.
WHAT HELPX MEANS TO ME: Giving HelpXers a chance to be creative, inventive, resourceful and independent, given access to the extensive machinery and equipment that is available. Sure, the camaraderie a... more inside

We are two long time friends who share common goals and desires for a simpler life, living on a fifty acre farmstead located between Ottawa and Montreal. We are in the process of restoring an old farm, reviving pastures and fields, and working towards self sufficiency. We grow fruit & vegetables, and raise Shetland sheep for wool and meat. We also raise chickens for eggs. We use the wool from the sheep to make some of our products that we sell, such as felt hats, toques, mittens, sweaters, and more.

We have been welcoming Canadian and international travelers through various programs for over 15 years, and have had some wonderful times, and developped lasting friendships along the way. We truly enjoy sharing our lives and our love for the homesteading arts and are grateful for the benefits these opportunities bring as well as committed to working through some of the challenges that crop up as strangers become friends. Skills and experience are not as important to us as a wilingnes... more inside
