Our family has been in the Carolina low-country since the 1670s, and here on this property since 1827. The farm and family have seen many changes throughout the centuries, and is looking to the future!

An experimental and educational farm/homestead, we are working to bring a high level of self-sufficiency/sustainability here and to share our knowledge with our visitors.

This is the farm's 9th year hosting visitors. Forty-five countries represented and over 375 guests staying, all have helped make the farm a better place. They have laughed, learned, sweated, plus they have help grow and have eaten some great food. We hope all that spend time here will take something positive away with them. Looking forward to another year of great helpers and guests!

***Now accepting volunteers for 2019, from July onward, **TWO week minimum stay**...May & June are fully booked, though we have room for folks who have their own camping gear.

Hi, I'm looking for someone to help in starting a suburban organic container garden. I recently sold a large plot of land, and I miss having fresh fruits and vegetables. I earned a Master Gardener Certificate in Fort Bend County, so growing veggies isn't a problem. Finding the time to do it is... I just bought some fruit trees to plant, and I would love to have an edible landscape again. My home is near several parks and lakes. You would have your own room, private bath with supplies, access to kitchen and laundry. I'll provide the food, but you'll need to cook for yourself. (Trust me on that advice...)

This is a suburban setting with close access to all amenities. But there's not much within walking distance. I have an old truck you can borrow from time to time. But you'll need a drivers license. I have a full-time job, and can't ferry you around during the week. I work 7 locations, and stay in hotels a couple of nights/week, so you'll have the house to yourself sometimes. No wi... more inside

About Our Farm

The Farm: Our farm is entirely off grid (some cellphone signal with verizon), self-sustaining for energy, water, and at times food. The mission is to take this valley from a raw deforested state of past abuses to a balanced and fully closed loop system. Currently we sit in a vast and open space with loads of pasture along with amazing views. Mountainous topography (well nc mountains) at a comfortable 3,500 feet above sea level. Approximately 75% is pasture which is managed using a rotationally grazing system with Scottish highland cattle, donkeys pals, and 8 dairy goats. Other animals/friends are 3 horses, 25 chickens and 12 Guinea fowl and 5 ducks. The springs here are popping out of the landscape creating a creek in the bottom down into the woods, which is a beautiful refreshing escape outside the open pastures.

Who we are: Jonny and Kalin Allen.

Jonny has been working our farm for the past 5 years listening and observing the landscape. He has taken the ... more inside

We have now hosted HelpXers for several years and love meeting folks from all over the world! We are a small farm and are considered an agri-tourism destination as we have a "Healing Spring" on the property. Discovered in 1883 the water from the spring has many curative powers. The spring is available for free to anyone who wants to come and get the water.

We are near many great hiking destinations, Mt. Rogers, Grayson Highlands State Park, Stone Mountain, Doughton Park and the many trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway that crosses through our part of the state of North Carolina. We are just off of the New River with fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Additionally, the Virginia Creeper Trail, Rocky Knob Park and the Railroad Grade trail offer great biking opportunities. We are 10 minutes from the town of West Jefferson with a great Farmers Market and cute town with artisan shops. We are just a short driving distance several larger cities.
