I am a retired U.S. diplomat with extensive overseas experience, including two years in Iraq. I am continuing to work at the Department of State part-time during the week. I am also the sole proprietor of a Bernese Mountain Dog operation, raising and training these companion animals. This is a large Swiss breed of the Working Dog Group that has many wonderful traits. I have two dogs, Nora, 7 1/2 years (acquired July '15), and a boy, Mirko, nearly five years old, from Belgium. My dogs normally participate in a variety of performance activities including agility, drafting, herding and obedience and I would expect my HelpXer to assist in those efforts.

I tried unsuccessfully to breed Nora several times; due to an infected uterus, I had to have her spayed a few months ago. I am looking to add a puppy girl to our household in the next few months and will absolutely need another pair of hands to help with her care. General kennel and household/yard chore duties are also expected. My... more inside

15 Aug 2019 Update

Hello, I'm Martin! Come visit Dave and me as we build an intentional community which supports and encourages its members to become better versions of themselves. We consciously try to treat ourselves, each other, and the environment gently.

Roosevelt said “For those who fight for it life has a flavor the sheltered will never know.” We live a lifestyle of voluntary poverty which is filled with discovery, adventure and real, live, human interaction (Gasp!). Occasionally, we are without electricity, water or heat. We have become very skilled at adapting and overcoming. The skills and attitudes cultivated here are vital for survival in a post-collapse society.

No, we are not some kind of Doomsday Cult. Frankly, an apocolyptic bang would be nice. Unfortunately, myself and those around me see a future where 10% of the population live comfortably while the rest of us malinger in their squalor. Governments are not moving fast enough to combat climate change, over... more inside

One thing I can advise helpers who want to get a placement with any host is to have at least one PICTURE of YOURSELF. Just as you like to "see" who and where you`re coming, hosts like to see who they`re opening their home to.
It's Summer now so there's always lots to do in the garden. Knowledge of Carpentry and plumbing are always appreciated. Organizing is good too. I do need someone who isn't afraid to help with painting the roof and car mechanics are always helpful. I would really appreciate someone who can do handyman jobs and wants to come for a week or two. I sell things online and on eBay and would love someone who is good at writing descriptions in English and also anyone who is experienced at building websites.
I have a large house and property in a diverse area of Staten Island, New York that I`m always working on.
I plant a vegetable garden in the spring using the square foot gardening method. A friend and I rebuilt the whole house on the inside including jacking i... more inside

Our farm-house is on 46 acres of pasture and wood accessed via dirt road. Not all mobile phones can get a signal here, and we don't have WiFi. We keep chickens for eggs, we garden for fresh veggies, and we preserve vegetables and meat to enjoy during the winter.

We'll consider your interest and ability when handing out tasks, which might include some of the following: gardening, canning, crafts, hide tanning, cooking, cleaning, tending animals, and so on. Of course we'll teach you what you don't know how to do.

We're primarily interested in people who want to enjoy life on the farm and intend to spend most of their time there. It's best if you can be satisfied on the homestead because we are far from town and town is small. We can take you with us on supply runs, fishing, etc. So there certainly will be time away from home as well.

Current projects:
Build fencing for bison and goats.
Stockpile firewood for the winter
Build wood-fired hot-tub

Join us in building a creative space.

We are a European couple who just moved into a beautiful Victorian house at the calm outskirts of the city. We are currently restoring it and want to open it up in the future to guests with a music background and other creative people. Bart has a background in tourism and hospitality, Eva in humanitarian affairs. Traveling and the finer things in life are central for us, which is something we want to implement in the conversion of this house. As a long term goal, this home will be at the center of a charity for children which Bart registered not too long ago.

To accomplish this, we are looking for people with a similar philosophy who want to give back, be part of a cool restauration project and take pride in their work ethics. As this is a cultural experience we are also looking forward to tasting your cuisine as we shall introduce ours to you. PS: You have to love cats.

We are a vibrant farming and handcrafting community that includes adults with developmental disabilities. Our residents, living and participating side by side, create a dynamic and caring community for people of all ages and varied abilities. Located on 432 acres of farm, gardens and woodlands in Chester County, Pennsylvania, we are also a local center for culture and a model for sound ecological living.
Coworkers are invited to live in one of our "extended family" style lifesharing houses and receive all their meals there as well. Our agricultural and craft workshops include a weavery, pottery, mosaic studio, fiber arts, bakery, cafe, or bio-dynamic gardens, orchard and dairy farm. In addition to coworker positions, we also offer 1-2 year biodynamic apprenticeships in our dairy and vegetable CSA through The Biodynamic Association`s Beginning Farmer Training Program. We are located in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. We live in a quiet hollow, with no neighbors in sight. There are no city lights, and you can see every star on a clear night!

Running a homestead is hard but rewarding work. Homesteading is not for the faint of heart. It requires a certain strength of character to chose such a life. Homesteading should not be confused with farming.

We have a lot you can be involved in, knowledge to share, friendships to build, and opportunities for growth.

Below are our daily routines, projects, and wish list. We would love to involve you!

- Caring for our horse, chickens, ducks, cats, dog, and honey bees. Sue is a fourth generation beekeeper and has much knowledge to share.

- General landscaping upkeep such as mowing and weed whacking.

- Caring for young fruit trees.

- Plant, cultivate, harvest fruits and vegetables; Assist with home-canning (preserving) of fruits and vegetables. Extending the herb garden.

This is an organic farm, community and education center that is off the grid and uses no fossil fuels. We grow most of our own food, and also grow organic vegetable seeds which we sell to a local seed company, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

Our community and farm are powered by the sun and farm-grown biofuels. We have developed a unique DC micro-grid that we actively promote to other groups and communities as an economical alternative to grid power and fossil fuel. We are continuing to improve our systems for fossil-fuel-free farm traction and cooking.

We host interns and work exchangers year-round. Work is usually agricultural from May to October, and technological projects the rest of the year. Kids are welcome. Interns and volunteers donate 30 hours of work per week in exchange for room, board and educational opportunities.

We are part of a network of egalitarian and income-sharing communities in Louisa County that includes Twin Oaks and Acorn Communities.
