We are located in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. We live in a quiet hollow, with no neighbors in sight. There are no city lights, and you can see every star on a clear night!

Running a homestead is hard but rewarding work. Homesteading is not for the faint of heart. It requires a certain strength of character to chose such a life. Homesteading should not be confused with farming.

We have a lot you can be involved in, knowledge to share, friendships to build, and opportunities for growth.

Below are our daily routines, projects, and wish list. We would love to involve you!

- Caring for our horse, chickens, ducks, cats, dog, and honey bees. Sue is a fourth generation beekeeper and has much knowledge to share.

- General landscaping upkeep.

- Caring for young fruit trees.

- Plant, cultivate, harvest fruits and vegetables; Assist with home-canning (preserving) of fruits and vegetables. Extending the herb garden.

- We have various ongoing cons... more inside

23 April 2019 Update

Hello, I'm Martin! Come visit Ben, Dave, Michelle and me as we build an intentional community which supports and encourages its members to become better versions of themselves. We consciously try to treat ourselves, each other, and the environment gently.

Roosevelt said “For those who fight for it life has a flavor the sheltered will never know.” We live a lifestyle of voluntary poverty which is filled with discovery, adventure and real, live, human interaction (Gasp!). Occasionally, we are without electricity, water or heat. We have become very skilled at adapting and overcoming. The skills and attitudes cultivated here are vital for survival in a post-collapse society.

No, we are not some kind of Doomsday Cult. Frankly, an apocolyptic bang would be nice. Unfortunately, myself and those around me see a future where 10% of the population live comfortably while the rest of us malinger in their squalor. Governments are not moving fast enough to combat cli... more inside

One thing I can advise helpers who want to get a placement with any host is to have at least one PICTURE of YOURSELF. Just as you like to "see" who and where you`re coming, hosts like to see who they`re opening their home to.
It's Spring now so there's always lots to do in the garden getting ready for planting. Knowledge of Carpentry and plumbing are always appreciated. Organizing is good too. I do need someone who isn't afraid to help with roofing when the weather turns warmer and car mechanics are always helpful. I would really appreciate someone who can do handyman jobs and wants to come for a week or two. I sell things online and on eBay and would love someone who is good at writing descriptions in English and also anyone who is experienced at building websites.
I have a large house and property in a diverse area of Staten Island, New York that I`m always working on.
I plant a vegetable garden in the spring using the square foot gardening method. A friend and I rebuilt th... more inside

We are a vibrant farming and handcrafting community that includes adults with developmental disabilities. Our residents, living and participating side by side, create a dynamic and caring community for people of all ages and varied abilities. Located on 432 acres of farm, gardens and woodlands in Chester County, Pennsylvania, we are also a local center for culture and a model for sound ecological living.
Coworkers are invited to live in one of our "extended family" style lifesharing houses and receive all their meals there as well. Our agricultural and craft workshops include a weavery, pottery, mosaic studio, fiber arts, bakery, cafe, or bio-dynamic gardens, orchard and dairy farm. In addition to coworker positions, we also offer 1-2 year biodynamic apprenticeships in our dairy and vegetable CSA through The Biodynamic Association`s Beginning Farmer Training Program. Accepting Helpers for 2019 season!

Our farm is a 200-acre homestead in rural western Pennsylvania, set among rolling hills and vast forests. Established in 1976, the farm has had a long-standing history of sustainability. For many years our family lived without electricity or telephone service, and we raised all of our own organic produce and livestock.

We continue to grow vegetables in a large organic garden, maintain a small orchard, and raise organic free-range lamb and free-range chickens. In the springtime we are busy maple-sugaring and assisting our flock of sheep through lambing season. In the summer months we are busy gardening, landscaping, and rotationally-grazing our livestock. Harvesting and stocking up for winter is the focus in the autumn, and the winter hours are filled with animal husbandry, timber-stand improvement projects, and preparations for spring. From time to time we may also be involved in soap making and collection of wild mushrooms and berries.

*Now accepting interns for the 2019 season (May-September).*

We are building an off-the-grid homestead and education center following the principles of organic agriculture and permaculture design. We are situated on 12 acres of field and forest, in the rural hamlet of West Edmeston, located alongside a growing Amish community in central New York State.

Our accredited internship program has attracted interns from North & South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand. Interns will gain hands-on experience in low-till organic farming, regenerative agroforestry, permaculture, natural building, and food preservation. We are seeking interns interested in disconnecting from the mainstream, learning to support ourselves by growing our own organic produce, utilizing natural building methods to construct our barn and dwelling structures, making our own household products like soap and shampoo, reviving traditional agricultural and lifestyle practices, and living in community.

We are long-time urban homesteaders committed to revitalizing our neighborhood, which is nestled along the west bank of Genesee River in southwest Rochester. We have rejuvenated over 30 homes, nurtured fruits, vegetables, flowers and bees on unused land, and have tried to breathe new life into an area in need of re-investment and community-building. Nearly every week we host a potluck dinner for friends and renters. In addition to hosting HelpX and other volunteers, we've had renters from over 40 countries, and presently (Feb.2018) we have tenants from Cameroon, China, Colombia, Germany, Ghana, Honduras, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Somalia and Uruguay, and of course throughout the United States.

HelpXers would assist us with tasks ranging from

We are the best of friends who live together and run a 24-hour café in Oneonta, New York. We built our rustic Deli with our own hands, using old rustic barn wood and other recycled materials. We love working together to serve good, wholesome food in a warm, encouraging environment — a haven from the storms of life.

Our community is part of a worldwide network of communities, many of which also run cafes, organic farms, and cottage industries where volunteers are also welcome to live and work with us.

We all work together in our houses and at our café. There is a lot to do in maintaining a community. We have two large houses and a café that need constant care and attention. We enjoy having guests and volunteers who want to get to know us by living and working with us.

We gather together every morning (at 7am) and evening (at 6pm) to express whatever is on our hearts, to sing and dance, and to give thanks to our Creator before sitting down at the table to share our meals to... more inside
