*Accepting internship applications for May-September 2020.*

Unadilla Community Farm was founded in 2013 by a group of volunteers dedicated to the goals of the back-to-the-land movement. We are building an off-grid solar-powered homestead and education center following the principles of organic agriculture and permaculture design. We are situated on 12 acres of field and forest, alongside a growing Amish community in central New York State.

2020 is our 7th season welcoming interns. Our accredited internship program has attracted interns from North & South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand. Interns gain hands-on experience in no-till organic farming, regenerative agroforestry, permaculture, natural building, and food preservation. University students in the U.S. & Canada have earned course credits for our internship program (ask your advisor if you are eligible to earn credit too!).

Our internship is more than just a beginning farmer training program. It is an im... more inside

We are a vibrant farming and handcrafting community of about 110 people that includes adults with developmental disabilities. Our residents, living and participating side by side, create a dynamic and caring community for people of all ages and varied abilities. Located on 432 acres of farm, gardens and woodlands in Chester County, Pennsylvania, we are also a local center for culture and a model for sound ecological living.

Each year about 25 volunteers join our community for an immersive and meaningful year-long experience; we do also have some interns join us for 1-3 months as well. Volunteers have their own room in one of our "family" style lifesharing houses and receive all their meals there as well. Most volunteers will spend about half time helping in one of our houses and half in one of our agricultural and craft workshops, which include a weavery, pottery, mosaic studio, fiber arts, bakery, cafe, or bio-dynamic gardens, orchard and dairy farm.

One thing I can advise helpers who want to get a placement with any host is to have at least one PICTURE of YOURSELF. Just as you like to "see" who and where you`re coming, hosts like to see who they`re opening their home to.

The weather is warming up now so there is lots to do outside in the garden. Knowledge of Carpentry and Plumbing are always appreciated. I do need someone who isn't afraid to help with painting the roof, when the weather is warmer and car mechanics are always helpful. I would really appreciate someone who can do handyman jobs and wants to come for a week or two. I sell things online and on eBay and would love someone who is good at writing descriptions in English.
I have a large house and property in a diverse area of Staten Island, New York that I`m always working on.
I plant a vegetable garden in the spring using the square foot gardening method. A friend and I rebuilt the whole house on the inside including jacking it up and replacing the foundation,... more inside

** Openings April - October 2020 **

We are located in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. We live in a quiet hollow, with no neighbors in sight. There are no city lights, and you can see every star on a clear night!

Running a homestead is hard but rewarding work. Homesteading is not for the faint of heart. It requires a certain strength of character to chose such a life.

We have a lot you can be involved in, knowledge to share, friendships to build, and opportunities for growth. Below are our daily routines, projects, and wish list. We would love to involve you!

- Caring for our horse, chickens, ducks, cats, dog, and honey bees. Sue is a fourth generation beekeeper and has much knowledge to share.

- General landscaping upkeep such as mowing and weed whacking.

- Caring for young fruit trees.

- Plant, cultivate, and harvest fruits and vegetables including Shiitake mushrooms. Assist with home-canning (preserving) of fruits and vegetables. Extending th... more inside

Hello!
Currently traveling/HelpXing/Karma-Yogying so not hosting at this time.

We were Helpers abroad in New Zealand and met some great people so we thought we would like to try being hosts too! We have also been Karma-Yogis recently in the Bahamas so helpers with an interest in this are encouraged to contact us as well.

*PLEASE NOTE: HelpXers that are already in the US and coming our way are welcome to contact us. Please do not make us your sole destination, and commit to a specific arrival date.

Lee is rebuilding a 45 ft. Wooden Schooner in a small Historical/Maritime town. This area is a great place to relax/unplug/create/swim/walk/bike/sail and paddle but city thrills one must drive for. We also bring other boats back to life with cosmetic repairs and enjoy sailing them. Short walking distance to shops, library & post. We also have a 25 ft sailboat in the water for sailing fun & accommodation. Tent space is also available.
In summer we are on the Chesapeake Bay ... more inside

UPDATE: Feb 26th 2020
FIRST MUSHROOM FLUSH IS IN!

Howdy Traveler!

Out with the old and in with the new, 2020. Hello, I'm Martin. My goal is to be the Mushroom King of the Eastern Shore! Will you come hang out with me and help?

I am a happily divorced, 51 year-old man with a vision. I want to expand the current regional farm-to-table model, dominated by produce and fish.I plan to offer locally grown gormet mushrooms to the current market, while also providing valuable chicken waste disposal solutions. I expect sales channels to be both to the restaurants and direct to consumer via produce wagon.

As of January I have acquired commercial office and grow space, as well as orderedspores and substrate. Today I began cleaning, and I expect by next week to have offices and clean rooms and grow areas built. April I expect my first flush (crop) and I should have a Mushroom Stand built at a very busy intersection with a produce stand across the street.

I used to run a b... more inside

Highland Farm is located on 160 acres of forests and rolling pastures, with ponds and an extensive forest trail system in Southwestern Virginia, nestled among the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The Jefferson National Forest, the New River, and multiple access points to the Appalachian Trail are less than twenty minutes away. Over the years, our family and others we have invited to live on our property have undertaken a wide variety of projects—a market garden business, music festivals, tiny house and van builds, trail building and forest gardening projects, sheep dog trials, airplane landing strips, and more. We have always believed in making the amazing resources of our farm available to members of our community and beyond who have a passion for living close to the land in a creative, communal setting.

We are looking for helpers as we move the farm in new directions in the upcoming years. In 2020, we are planning on focusing primarily on Airbnb as a way to generate income on th... more inside

Sorry but with the various issues surrounding the coronavirus, we will be delaying opening our home for the next two months. If all goes well we may be able to start accepting farm guests again in June.

I am halter training two heifer calves, they are 10 months old now and will be almost a year old when we will be open again next season.I hope to teach them ox commands to eventually do light duty work on the farm. Come and learn with me! Planting, harvesting, weeding in the gardens, cattle care, chickens, bees, some building, in season mushroom foraging and cultivation, and much more in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mts of Virginia.

We are not your typical American family, farm stay or community. I garden extensively, have chickens, cattle. bees - somewhat like a homestead. We live in an intentional community of 60 adults and 12 or so kids and teens. We own about 500 acres of land together. Our community has been going strong for 45 years. We are based on co operative living and de... more inside
