Antbear Lodge offers visitors a unique opportunity of a volunteer program for those of you who would like to spend a bit more time being a bit closer to the South Africa lifestyle. Andrew used to volunteer all over the world 30 years ago and loved the experience and this is something he has created to give something back.

Volunteers have 3 options.

1. Conny has 9 horses and is continually training and excising them. We practice the softer horse whispering techniques and go for slow outrides on the farm. We have a foal that needs a lot of attention too. Conny also has a few donkeys to need to be cared for. Most of the animals on the farm were rescues and are now living in a very loving and cared for space.

2. You can work together with Andrew doing woodwork and alternative building. Andrew will teach you our unique style of woodwork and alternative building. Passion for this is everything but experience will help too. Its difficult to say exactly what you will be doing but w... more inside

*** Due to such a great response, we are not currently taking new people until September. ***

We are a family of 5 who lead regular city lives, however we are in the process of trying to convert our home, into an urban farm with food forest / permaculture / organic influences.

We currently have fruit and nut trees, some chickens and quail, some annual vegetable patches, edible perrenials and a small nursery.

With autumn cooling the evenings, and the days bringing the promise of rain, we are entering into planting for the winter garden.

As of 2018 we have started doing monthly garden tours, to enable people to be inspired to grow their own food. You can see what we are upto on the above website and social media platforms.

While we are currently building a wicking bed wall, with a bit of luck you might get to choose your work from the list if I have no preference. In no special order.
Building a ramp to the front of the house.
Setting up our Aquaponics system.

Fairy Knowe Backpackers is a well-known establishment, situated alongside the Wilderness National Park. We are looking for volunteers who will be here for at least two months. Presently we have availability from April to August.

Working and living at Fairy Knowe is a unique experience. To get the best from the experience requires a combination of hard work, enthusiasm, honesty and being proactive about using your time off to enjoy the surrounding area.

We like our volunteer staff to represent a healthy gender balance, and we make sure that the people who come here feel welcome and part of the team.

There are various tasks that could suit your skills. The main ones are: working behind the bar, and working front of house. We don't make people do things that they really don't like doing, and we don't take people on who are not keen or able to do the primary tasks required to run the backpackers business. We presently have an additional need. We need a volunteer to tutor a 10 y... more inside

We are a family of 4- mom, dad 11 year-old boy and Granny with 3 dogs, 3 cats and a lot of chickens! We have started from scratch as there were no buildings and no grid power. We are building our own steel-framed, straw bale house with all means of alternative power. Our long-term goal is to be self-sustaining. We would like short-term help with building like clay plastering.
Being a farm, there are many other things which need doing like repairing fencing, animal care, path making etc. We have a small timber cabin with a comfy queen bed with linen provided. There is also a caravan with 2 separate beds.
At present there are shared ablutions with the family while we finish our house.
We provide a weekly box of mostly dry foods, with eggs from our hens , some fresh veg and dairy bought in. There is a shipping container which is the living area and has a kitchen to prepare your meals. You can bring anything not on the good list we provide. There is no fridge- just a cold box. We of... more inside
