We are a nature reserve at the edge of Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. The guest house is not very busy, so there is ample time to participate in a variety of tasks, from ringing birds (Alan's research project associated with the FitzPatrick Institute, University of Cape Town) and wildlife monitoring (camera trap maintenance and data entry) to orchard work. You will probably also be asked to occasionally keep an eye on 2 children aged 8 and 6, who like the outdoors and going for walks.

We will preferentially take volunteers who can spend more than 2 weeks. Some tasks involve predawn starts and a lot of time in the mountains.

Other main projects include alien vegetation control, erosion control on our dirt roads, helping establish a fitness centre in Uniondale, and maintaining hiking trails. All sorts of other tasks may also appear, depending on time of year, what needs fixing etc. Most of the work that we need done throughout the year is quite physical. Helpers should be up fo... more inside

Hi there! This is a beautiful, popular, alternative, eco-friendly backpackers that overlooks the stunning Tsitsikamma nature reserve on the Garden Route of South Africa. Only 8km from Natures Valley beach and lagoon, our farm is surrounded by natural forests, wildlife, peace and quiet. We have a private waterfall in the forest just below our vibey tree-house bar, and a constant flow of interesting, adventurous, passionate and conscious travellers passing by every single day.

We run our hostel on an ‘energy-trade’ system. This means that travellers who would like to be with us for a longer period can stay on and help us run the backpackers in a variety of different ways in exchange for their food and lodging. We encourage a stay of 1 month or longer, but can make exceptions where possible for shorter time-frames.
We are particularly interested in people with experience or interest in the hospitality industry (reception, bar, cooking), alternative energy, organic gardening and ca... more inside

We are a family of 5 who lead regular city lives, however we are in the process of trying to convert our home, into an urban farm with food forest / permaculture / organic influences.

We currently have fruit and nut trees, some chickens and quail, some annual vegetable patches, edible perrenials and a small nursery.

With autumn cooling the evenings, and the days bringing the promise of rain, we are entering into planting for the winter garden.

As of 2018 we have started doing monthly garden tours, to enable people to be inspired to grow their own food. You can see what we are upto on the above website and social media platforms.

While we are currently building a wicking bed wall, with a bit of luck you might get to choose your work from the list if I have no preference. In no special order.
Building a ramp to the front of the house.
Setting up our Aquaponics system.
Rain tanks are connected, leaf catchers needed
Continuing wicking beds build. Final bed of three t... more inside

Fairy Knowe Backpackers is a well-known establishment, situated alongside the Wilderness National Park. We are looking for volunteers who will be here for at least two months. Presently we have availability for September, October and November. In particular someone to tutor little Mimi. Also from December through Summer we will need an extra hand for front of house, bar, and adventures.
Working and living at Fairy Knowe is a unique experience. To get the best from the experience requires a combination of hard work, enthusiasm, honesty and being proactive about using your time off to enjoy the surrounding area.

We like our volunteer staff to represent a healthy gender balance, and we make sure that the people who come here feel welcome and part of the team.

There are various tasks that could suit your skills. The main ones are: working behind the bar, and working front of house. We don't make people do things that they really don't like doing, and we don't take people on who a... more inside

Bramleigh Farm is a small scale diversified farm with a focus on regenerative agricultural systems, started in 2017. We grow vegetables organically, raise chickens for meat and eggs on pasture, and forest raised pigs. Our processes aim to mimic nature and build each other as far as possible. We have 4 self catering cottages that are booked most weekends.

We are looking for volunteers to assist on the farm and in the guesthouse. Jobs include: moving animals, feeding animals, planting, harvesting, bed preparation, washing and packing vegetables for market, garden work (trimming, pruning, tidying), building jobs, and may extend into helping in the guesthouse if required.
Experience with organically grown vegetables on a market scale would be a winner! As would interest in food/cooking.

We have a dedicated team of full time staff members. You may be required to work with us, with our staff, or independently, depending on the job. We try to allow each person to work within their... more inside
