Situated on the hillside overlooking the picturesque Shyankhudi valley and the majestic Begnas Tal lake, we are certainly not your ordinary,run-of-the-mill farm.

The farm was started 30 years ago (1987 AD) by my parents, Surya Mohan Bastola and Sita Devi Bastola, and has now become a thriving oasis of plant and animal life. Overall, there are more than 500 species of plants that have been deemed useful to humans and/or animals. These are mostly made up of vegetables, fruit trees, and medicinal plants. Everything at the farm is 100% organically grown, without the use of any chemical pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides, etc.

All the fruits and vegetables that are eaten on a daily basis come straight from our very own soil (besides the odd addition from neighbours` farms). We also receive fresh milk daily from our two family buffaloes. On special occasions, we may catch some fish from one of our ponds. The diversity and richness of plant life here makes our home the perfect abod... more inside

I live here with Ganesh, my 96-year-old father who passed away in the most peaceful & beautiful way. Sarita, my wife of 50 years & Priya, my 16-year-old daughter. We started this farm in 1991 with the dream of being organic & self-sustainable.

My parents live separate, dad to South East, mom to little Central North part. Dad is into spirituality.
Mom into business. I came to live with mom, help little to manage this business and life style. I had been volunteering for years in Nepal and Cambodia. Organic farm, school in hills, restaurants.
The business is: we buy old, broken, dry trees from Government or Private Forests.
We cut them, sell them.
Bring some to our furniture and make furniture. Simple as that.
We travel different parts of Nepal for trees in hills, rural parts of Nepal.
We live together.

We want to start a non profit project in coming days but for now I need to settle this business and prepare parents into shift.
Project to combine organic lifestyle. Self sustainable. Zero waste.

If you are interested in learning about Nepalese cultures, cuisines, traditions and festivals, then a homestay is the best way to see the real Nepal. By doing this you will be introduced to a plethora of brand new experiences in an authentic Nepalese environment; rich with culture. An additional plus will be the warm and welcoming Nepalese hospitality at its best within our home.

We have three members in our family: me (Shanker), my mother and our daughter (Chun Chun) who is 17 years old. My brother Pradeep runs a small money exchange office in Thamel, which is about a 20 minutes direct walk from our home. Our home is located in a very safe and peaceful residential area called Gongabu Town Planning, Gongabu. We belong to the Newar ethnic group, who are the indigenous people of Kathmandu Valley. Newari culture is historically rich and possesses many unique traditions and rituals; one of which includes marrying our daughters to the bel-tree fruit and the Sun. This is only the second school in Nagarkot, nice Nepalese village in Bhaktapur district; a 1.5 hrs bus ride from Kathmandu. It hopes to provide an English medium education for underprivileged children. The school has 7 staff members taking care of its 80+ students - aged from 4 to 12 years old - and would benefit from any help volunteers can provide.

Volunteers can expect to as class helpers and also share teaching tips with the school if they can. Volunteers can also help beautify the classrooms murals to help the kids as visual aids during their school time. Becoming an independent class teacher is also an option for long-term volunteers as soon as they have a grasp on the school's curriculum and vision for students.

Other jobs for volunteers include:
- Writing class exercises and homework exercises for students (we have no printing/photocopying facilities)

- Designing class quizzes and tests

- Introducing interactive, educational games through which children can lear... more inside

**We currently have vacancies For January 2020 onwards.........

Namaste!

We invite travelers to come and experience Nepal in a mountain farming community. We run a primary school in the rural community of Saping, which is 3 hours bus-ride plus a 2 hour walk from Kathmandu. This is a beautiful area of Nepal with mountain views and rice-terraces.

The school offers free education to students, and has a special focus on educating children from poor families; some of our students walk 2 hours a day just to get to and from school. Our village was badly impacted by the earthquake; around 70% of our students are still living in temporary shelters.

VOLUNTEER ROLES

We`re primarily looking for volunteers who are willing to teach, however volunteers can also do some farming, cooking, or maintenance work.

Our volunteers teach the standard curriculum of English, maths, health, social studies and science - usually to the grade 4 or 5 class. You can also teach art, music, sport,... more inside

Welcome to our farm and family. We are established as small organic farmers with our parents since 1995, working with Himalayan Permaculture Center based in Surkhet (western part of Nepal). We are a permaculture family with two generation, three of us have our PDC but we are all invested in our land. We are five and three of us speak quite good English but our parent English is simpler, so you will learn some Nepali!

If you want to discover the traditional Nepali lifestyle and learn about culture and festival in the Katmandu valley, and also in the same time learn and share your knowledge about permaculture, you are at the good place!
Only fifteen minutes by taxi from Thamel (you can also come by bus). You are more than welcome in this nice place that looks like a village.
On our land, we grow many different classic vegetables (Tomato, cucumber, peas, potato, onion, garlic…) and we also grow some cereals (wheat, rice…) using Fukuoka system(No Tilling Farming) and Sys... more inside
