We are running a small democratic school (free school) in the countryside, looking for volunteers to maintain our vegetable gardens, look after our chickens, ducks, dogs, and bees, and have fun with the kids. Anyone interested in organic farming, self-sufficiency, reducing your carbon footprint, and education would be welcome here. We love it when volunteers bring their own talents and interests and can share them.

We run the school out of our house and we are located on mountainside with access to beautiful hiking trails nearby, and an orchard and vegetable fields which we are developing into a forest garden. On a typical day helpers will split their time between the daily chores, farm and garden maintenance, and helping out with with the housework and communal meals. We believe in putting in hard work to achieve our goals, but also to take time to fully enjoy country life and our community.

We ask our volunteers for a minimum stay of two weeks, but we take preference for lon... more inside

Our mountain lodge is located in the heart of Wakayama's Kumano Kodo, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." We're located 3 hours from Osaka's Kansai International Airport by train and bus. Specifically, near the beginning of the Nakahechi pilgrimage route in the mountain village of Takahara (population of about 40) where we strive to provide travelers and hikers with a unique glimpse into Japan's countryside, local cuisine, and of course a relaxing stay in one of our eight rooms. Many of the ingredients used in our cooking are harvested or foraged locally and our hotel was constructed with timber sourced in the region, hence our hotel being called organic. With beautiful views of the valley below, terrace seating in the dining area, and onsen bath to soak in after a long hike, travelers always leave smiling.

As we are in a rural area deep in the mountains with an aging population, help from HelpX volunteer... more inside

HELPERS NEEDED IN AUGUST!!!

Hi everyone, my name is Misa. I work at this hostel two to three days a week and I am loving the people and the culture here a lot!
The hostel was established in December 2016, and it is in a perfect location where you have easy access to outside countries and also around Japan!
The beds, tables, chairs and other furniture are from the sleeping car train called "Hokutosei" which was loved by many people, but ended the service in 2015. You will love an unique and exciting atmosphere of a sleeping car train!
The staffs here are very friendly and welcoming. If you are looking for a place to exchange and learn different cultures, explore the coolest and one of the biggest cities in the world, and make friends from all over the world, it is the best place to stay!

**Please note that you will need a valid working holiday/ student visa when volunteering**

We are looking for English speakers, and Japanese speakers are more than welcome.

I live with my three year old son in a small mountainous village about 30km north of Kyoto. We need help in basic household matters such as cleaning the house, washing, gardening, sawing, cooking and babysitting if necessary. We would also be very grateful if we could get help with DIY ( installing shelves, etc). There are no fixed work hours or tasks. We are looking for someone who is flexible to help various tasks around the house. Experienced mums & dads are welcome :-)
We would like to try for one week to see if compatible (especially my son who is not open to everybody). Simple breakfast and dinner is provided. (I try to use organic ingredients where possible). I would be happy to show the helper around the village. I could also exchange a massage session as I am an experienced therapist.
