Former smallholding on the Orkney island of Shapinsay, with around ten acres of shoreline, garden and grounds. House contains ensuite guest bedrooms and one for volunteer(s).In the summer Guests come for wildlife, archaeology, etc. and can also do craftwork and artwork, and join in with island life. Volunteers could also do these things year round -- few if any guests in the winter but maintenance and prep need doing.
In return for help volunteers get an ensuite room of their own or two sharing, use of other rooms, meals, lifts to and from the ferry, the opportunity to join in with whatever is going on in the island, and in Kirkwall -- good ferry service. Lots of traditional music -- I can lend instruments, fiddle, guitar, drum.
I am looking for helpers from now and throughout the summer for maintenance jobs inside and outside, cooking for me and helper(s). I would like to form a HelpX work party in SEPTEMBER to attempt a bigger project, partial demolition of a Nissen hut. Contac... more inside

My partner and I and three young children (4 and under) live about 3 miles from Biggar (the nearest town) where a bus can be taken. Edinburgh is about 25 miles and Glasgow just under 40 miles away.

We both have agricultural related jobs but we do not live on a farm. Currently I am on maternity leave. I am looking for someone who can help for about 4 hours a day. Work may involve gardening including weeding, planting, harvesting, lawn mowing, strimming, or painting fences. Indoor work may include help with general household chores. We have not lived here long so we are doing a few home improvements we might need a bit of help with, such as painting. You don't need to have experience with children but to like children would be good. Help might be needed to assist me with the children. We can decide upon the jobs depending on what your strengths and preferences.

We can be flexible on when you work your hours so that you can make the most of the area whilst you are here.... more inside

We live in the lowland hills of S Scotland, in a stunningly beautiful, wooded valley with the River Whiteadder flowing along it.

Work will be very varied depending on the time of year, the weather, and your skills.
It could include varied gardening jobs, picking black currants, raspberries and strawberries for eating/drying/freezing/making wine and cordial for the winter, helping in the sawmill, weeding baby trees or pruning, painting walls if it is raining or window frames if it is sunny, chain sawing in the forest (if you have experience), helping build the house (once we get permission to start), strimming, mending a dry-stone wall, joinery, making fruit leathers, cleaning out rainwater gutters, going on interesting timber deliveries to our customers...and lots more besides.

Work hours can be fairly flexible to suit the weather and what you are wanting to do.

Our business is forestry (300ha) and sawmilling.
We have several cottages that I look after that are lived in ... more inside

We live near a beautiful remote beach just outside of the village of Tighnabruaich on the stunning west coast of Scotland. My husband and myself need seasonal help from Easter until the end of September/beginning of October and are looking to offer accommodation in your own room in our house, (the room has bunks plus a double bed in it so it would suit a single person, or ideally 2 friends or a couple), plus some meals in exchange for help with running our pop up cafe that we run from a marquee in our grounds through the summer months (this is very weather dependent and mainly busy at the weekend and during school holidays) plus a bit of help around the house and grounds (mowing lawns, gardening, cleaning our holiday let, housework, ironing and general maintenance plus helping with our 4 dogs and 2 cats for us when we are working or if we occasionally go away overnight) Its nothing very demanding or time consuming, and you would get plenty of free time. We are an easy going sociable... more inside
