We are looking for a long-term volunteer to oversee our community garden at Elpida camp for Iraqi and Syrian refugees in Thessaloniki. The garden is an olive grove about half a hectare adjacent to the camp and part of the same property. Until recently it was entirely neglected but in the past week we have planted vegetables (beetroot, cucumber, courgette, tomatoes, peppers, swiss chard among others) on a 100 sq metre patch which had been prepared for weeks to be ready to plant. We are also currently building a chicken house to home about 14 chickens. Residents of the camp have been involved lots in the garden and the intention is to make it a very well used space. Experience working with refugees is preferable, as is growing experience! The role will involved working closely with residents to get them out in the garden and moving towards managing the farm as cooperatively as possible. We are looking for volunteers with no less than 3 months availability starting early to mid-May.
