We are an eco project within a larger eco project which consists of five eco projects co-creating in one valley.

We are lovingly restoring our abandoned quinta, it has a stone farm house, workshop and three large fields, and woodland. There is also an amazing water mine and various wells and now a recently dug swimming lake ! The woodland was planted around 40 years ago, we are currently in the process of regenerating it with native trees and nurturing the oaks, chestnut, wild cherry and hawthorn that already growing. Our plan is to create a mixed broadleaf woodland, encouraging the native tree species, fauna and flora.
The straw bale round house that we now have built is intended to be the focal point for the retreat centre. This is part of our vision to create a nature based sanctuary for visitors, offering space for workshops, events and gatherings.
We have also built a wooden therapy dome and have developed the eco camping area. We have also constructed a straw bale bath... more inside

This is an off-grid permaculture project of 2ha in the foothills of the Serra do Açor near the village of Benfeita. It's an evolving education and demonstration site for many aspects of sustainable living and I'm 9 years into the project now. The land is steeply terraced with vegetable gardens, fruit trees and vines, some olives, chestnut woodland, a stream, ponds and ancient stone-built waterways, a developing biodome with aquaponics system, a coniferous plantation under conversion to deciduous woodland, a growing food forest, and several buildings being constructed and renovated using natural materials and techniques.

In 2017 the various buildings, the geodome greenhouse and the permaculture design work were all coming into the final phases of completion. Then in October we, along with countless others throughout Central Portugal, were hit by the unprecedented and catastrophic wildfires which burned 2,000 square kilometres over the course of just 24 hours. I lost all my guest a... more inside

**Updated March 2019**

We are Pete and Anna, from the UK originally but we are living now on Ilha das Flores in Açores. We bought a small house and ruin with some land in September 2016 and we are building a house from the ruin and making a permaculture garden on our land to grow food for our family and guests.

Our place is in the village of Lomba on Ilha das Flores, which is in the western group of the Azores archipelago. The island is called the island of flowers and for good reason! It is a small and very beautiful island full of nature in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. In the village we have a bar with free Wi-Fi and a bakery. There is a bus to both of the towns on the island from here twice a day where you can go to the supermarket and bars. There is lots of hiking and camping to do on the island - if you love nature this is a great place to be.

We like to cook and eat together with our volunteers at mealtimes, everybody can contribute something to a meal even if it... more inside

Looking for people now.

WHO WE ARE
We are a family of 3, Erica (Mum), Panama (daughter) and Gary (daughter's partner). Early in 2016 we bought 2 acres of land that sits atop a hill looking out at the Serra do Acor. The view is stunning landscape with hardly a building or a light to be seen. The land faces south and is blessed with olive trees. We had a small mixed woodland and many fruit trees but these were burnt in the forest fire of October 2017, so we had to fell the woodland but we have 100 new trees coming in March 2019 to re-plant the woodland - walnut, pine nut, oak, cork, medronho, chestnuit are we are planting a new orchard of fruit trees, peach, apple, fig, nespera, medronho, yellow plum, purple plum, apricot, chestnut, hazel, tangerine, orange, lemon, persimmon, pear. We had a small vineyard of approx 200 vines but that did not survive the fire and we are not sure whether to replant that or not at this time. We also have a good sized veg plot. We grow everything org... more inside

Ancient Convent, recently restored, dating from the 17th century, in the middle of a farm with 4 ha situated right next to the beautiful village of Castelo de Vide and 10 km from Marvao.
The farm has olive trees, chestnut trees, fruit trees, a big well and a natural spring.
We are now in the process of starting a vegetable garden and doing some landscaping and we will need people to help us out with cleaning, trimming, planting, recovering walls and all kinds of agricultural work. Now we have some sheep and in the near future we will have donkeys, and chickens.
Inside the house there are lovely granite door frames that are painted and need to be brushed off and cleaned, furniture and windows need a little work (mainly sanding).
The Convent was built in 1639 and belonged to the religious order of Saint John of God until the 1800 when it was turned into a Military Hospital because of the Napeoleonic invasions. In the middle of the 19th century it was abandoned and became a ruin ... more inside

This is a family owned farm and vineyard in the village of Vale near Arcos de Valdevez. For the past 20 years the farm and vineyard have been cared for by myself, Emilia, and my husband Alexandre. Alexandre passed away leaving me to take on the responsibility myself. I also have a thriving business selling home-made jams. As you may understand, the amount of work for me alone is a lot. I have friends who help however, there is always plenty to do!
If you would like to come and help at my farm you can expect to be asked to do any of the following tasks:
Seasonal tasks in the vineyard, caring for the vegetable garden, harvesting crops such as potatoes or maize, cutting grass and keeping the farm tidy, chopping wood for the smoke house, feeding the ducks, chickens, rabbits, pigs, or dogs ( at the moment I only have dogs), or maybe even helping me in the small jam factory.
In return I will be happy to feed you three good meals a day and you may stay either in my small holiday cottag... more inside

Thank you for your interest in volunteering this summer

Here is some general infomation about the placement and answers some frequently asked questions. Please read carefully!
i would be keen to talk about the placement through skype.

We run a small popular canoeing and kayaking centre run from my small farm. The farm is 15 mins from Oliveira do Hospital and 20 mins from Tabua and the river Mondego in Central Portugal.

As a team, we prepare canoes and kayaks for day trips and multi day kayak camping trips. The journeys are self guided so our work is mainly preparing boats and equipment, transporting them to the river and picking up canoeists from a meeting point in Tabua where they leave their cars. We brief and instruct the groups at the river and meet them at the finish point.

The most important aspect of volunteering is that clients are met with friendly and professional people at the beginning and end of their canoe trip. A mobile phone is provided with the vehic... more inside

We are a retired couple living in a typical rural Algarve house, 4.7km from the town of Loule and 15min (by car) from the sea.

Pat (Irish) is a retired Limerick City fireman & Shannon River Marine Search & Rescue volunteer and Deborah (moi) American, is a retired entrepreneur, restaurateur, forest firefighter and Mountain Search & Rescue volunteer.

We are in need of of manual help during the year 2019. We prefer couples (but are open to single persons) to stay for minimum of 1 week and, if it feels right for ALL of us, for longer.

SOME of the time we'll work together on projects and sometimes not together depending on the day, work load etc. It's important for us that you understand gardening and how to use hand-tools as we are just too busy to teach and you must be able to work on your own sometimes.

We also have a small cottage business smoking Garlic and Mexican chilies and a pop-up BBQ 'supper-club' two evenings a month.

We have 1,800 english language books and... more inside

Would you like to to live in the sun?
Do you have reasonable “Handyman”, Maintenance, DIY and basic Gardening skills?
Would you like a life away from the heavy traffic and air pollution in the UK?
Would you like to walk to your local town to enjoy a coffee, beer or a glass of wine and then walk home in the evening feeling perfectly safe?
Is access to 24hr English speaking health care and chemists important to you?
We have a small farm in Portugal, away from the Algarve (the tourist area), in beautiful countryside close to lakes with fishing, bird-watching and water sports.
We do not grow crops or keep any livestock (just OAP Horses) but perhaps would like to develop these areas.
We also have a small Mobile Home Site, with all English retired/semi- retired residents.
We now have an opportunity for a person/couple/family to join us in maintaining and developing this lifestyle. This could be flexible from maybe a few hours each day in return for free accommodation, allowing y... more inside
