Hello....welcome to `The Castle` In The Gemfields of Central Queensland, a community made up of 4 small townships in an area where locals and tourists still fossick for gems. (Some of our Helpx`s have found some lovely gems to take home).

Coming to the Gemmies (as the locals call it) is like visiting old time Australia . So if you`d like to experience some `real` Aussie Outback we`d love to have you come visit

`The Castle ` was originally built to be a bed and breakfast. Built from s. olid concrete hand mixed by one man over 28 years. Now it is simply a place we call home.

Nestled on a hill in the middle of a cattle property the Castle runs on Solar or Generator Power and Rain Water so we are totally off the grid.

We offer food and a double roomed unit with your own toilet and shower. in exchange for 4 hours work a day x 5.
Currently we are painting and doing some yard work but any help like cooking or housekeeping would be a great help. We are really flexible.

We are a couple in our early 60's (Katy and John) who live on a rural coastal property at Guthalungra, North Queensland. Our property boarders the Elliot River and has views of nearby Cape Upstart and the Coral Sea. We earn our income breeding cattle and growing mangoes. Katy works 4 days per work in Ayr and John works full time on the property.

We try to be as self sustaining as possible by growing our own vegetables and fruit, our beef is grown on the property and our fish, prawns and mud crab we catch in the nearby Elliot river and Coral Sea. We have free range chickens to provide eggs and pigs for our ham and bacon. During March to September we grown a variety of vegetables for the household, where we can teach our helpers how to grow produce is our dry, hot climate. They learn how to prepare the soil, to pot and plant seedings, how to weed around the plants, pick, dry and freeze the produce and how to make sun-dried tomatoes, jams, cakes, desserts, relish, pickles, chutney,... more inside

DOGS, HORSES, MULES, Stunning location, FRIENDLY HOSTS. Easy travel to Toowoomba, and we can meet you there.
Australian bushland, in summer teeming with goannas, kangaroos, and sometimes koalas. Beautiful views and places to explore. We breed dogs for therapy and assistance work, and have pups due early late May that we would love a hand with. Lots of socialising and cuddles needed for them, and a hand with the day to day care of our very spoilt dogs. We are currently building a sustainable, off grid, home and would love a hand, even if you have never worked on farms before. You will learn lots about sustainability and the Australian countryside. While we build accommodation is in a comfortable float beside the house - meals etc all shared with our family. Family (all well travelled) includes Sonia, usually a zoologist but working full time with the horses at the moment & Max, environmental advisor, and son Brooke is paraglider and professional photographer. This home stay is on Magnetic Island, 25 minutes by ferry from Townsville, North Queensland. I will collect you from the local Island ferry terminal.

You will have your own room in a lovely tropical 2-storey home.
We need a helper to clean, garden, paint etc and maybe walk our 2 very friendly dogs on the beach some days. We are fun-loving, fair-minded retirees who have made many friends among previous helpers from a wide variety of countries.

We enjoy the surrounding bird-life and tropical lifestyle and hope you will too.

You will need to work from 9am to 1pm, with the seventh day fully off.

Would suit a fit and energetic person/people. Good food, nice house, use of the swimming pool.

Languages: English, some Thai and a little of Italian and French.

Vegetarian OK

We don't like overly religious types, so anyone dominated by faith or rituals is not suitable.

I was a local tour guide and will give the helper a free guided car tour of the Island.
