A "Natural" Building Project in the Scottish Highlands.

Hi HelpXers,

We live in a beautiful wooded glen (valley) near a village called Spinningdale about 50 miles (80 km.) north of Inverness in the northern Scottish Highlands, where we have a 6 acre (2.4 hectare) former croft (a "croft" is a traditional small Highland farmstead).

We are surrounded by 1700 acres (700 hectares) of stunning natural woodland belonging to a conservation body called The Woodland Trust. We help look after the woods as Voluntary Wardens.

Jim is an environmental scientist with a particular interest in ecological design and sustainable building using natural materials.

Saddhavati is an artist and teacher.

We are nearing completion of our "natural" home. It is a "passive solar" design based around a traditional post and beam timber frame with "breathing" external walls clad with untreated larch and a living green roof. The building is insulated throughout with hem... more inside

We live on a beautiful farm near Ullapool in the Highlands of Scotland surrounded by hills by a sea loch and with a lively village seven miles away. Accommodation is usually a mobile home with a shower and heating, adjacent to the farmhouse but warmer arrangements are made in the winter. We farm sheep and cows, and help is needed with feeding them, fencing, basic joinery and general farm work as well as drivng, and sometimes helping with the NHS hindcull, which is an amazing experience. Helpxes generally enjoy themselves and we have enjoyed having them. The highland experience is very unique, the people interesting and friendly. There will be an experienced supervisor and the next door farms have volunteers too who will socialise with those helping here in the local village which has live music. We find helpxes of 25 upwards most suitable and those who like the outdoor life and are strong fit, responsible and eager to learn new skills enjoy themselves the most. We would really value... more inside

---- In the next 10-20 days, we can host 1-2 helpers who are willing to work in the gardens and look after our cats ----

In addition, we currently need people with the following skills (you don`t have to be able to do all of this, but at least ONE of the following):

- basic construction / building (for building new bird pens and dog kennels)
- fencing (we need to take down some fences and put up some new ones)
- breaking in horses that have never been worked with

For gardening and fencing, we consider people who want to stay 10-14 days.

For the building projects, we would need you to stay 3-5 weeks. Longer stays are possible for the right person.

If you like cats and are reliable, you might be able to take over the care for the cats during your stay. And you might assist with the dogs, but as we have a long-term animal carer, we don`t necessarily need help with the animals and really can`t afford volunteers who don`t want to put the effort into doing the job righ... more inside
