I am a retired U.S. diplomat with extensive overseas experience, including two years in Iraq. I am continuing to work at the Department of State part-time during the week. I am also the sole proprietor of a Bernese Mountain Dog operation, raising and training these companion animals. This is a large Swiss breed of the Working Dog Group that has many wonderful traits. I have three dogs, Nora, 9 1/2 years (acquired July '15), a boy, Mirko, nearly seven years old, from Belgium, and a young girl, Bindi 21 months. My dogs normally participate in a variety of performance activities including agility, drafting, herding and obedience and I would expect my HelpXer to assist in those efforts on occasion.

I plan on breeding Bindi in the near future and will absolutely need another pair of hands to help with her care if/when she has puppies. General kennel and household/yard chore duties are also expected. My preferred length of stay would be at least two weeks to a month or longer. I cu... more inside

Our farm-house is on 46 acres of pasture and wood accessed via dirt road. Not all mobile phones can get a signal here, and we don't have WiFi. We keep chickens for eggs, we garden for fresh veggies, and we preserve vegetables and meat to enjoy during the winter.

We'll consider your interest and ability when handing out tasks, which might include some of the following: gardening, canning, crafts, hide tanning, cooking, cleaning, tending animals, and so on. Of course we'll teach you what you don't know how to do.

We're primarily interested in people who want to enjoy life on the farm and intend to spend most of their time there. It's best if you can be satisfied on the homestead because we are far from town and town is small. We can take you with us on supply runs, fishing, etc. So there certainly will be time away from home as well.

Current projects:
Build fencing for bison and goats.
Stockpile firewood for the winter
Build wood-fired hot-tub

Open for the 2020 season starting mid March 2020.

I am halter training two heifer calves, they are 9 months old now and will be almost a year old when we will be open again next season.I hope to teach them ox commands to eventually do light duty work on the farm. Come and learn with me! Planting, harvesting, weeding in the gardens, cattle care, chickens, bees, some building, in season mushroom foraging and cultivation, and much more in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mts of Virginia.

We are not your typical American family, farm stay or community. I garden extensively, have chickens, cattle. bees - somewhat like a homestead. We live in an intentional community of 60 adults and 12 or so kids and teens. We own about 500 acres of land together. Our community has been going strong for 45 years. We are based on co operative living and decision making, taking care of our beautiful land and promoting land stewardship and harmonious relationships. We live in owner built homes that range fro... more inside

Currently seeking volunteers for the following

Baltimore, MD

--------------------------------------------------

I have a tastefully restored classic row-house in Baltimore, Maryland.

I am a professional in my early forties who works full time in Washington, DC and owns a home in Baltimore, MD. The Baltimore home is a restored 19th century townhouse and I have five bedrooms that I share with roommates. Since I work full time and spend a lot of time commuting, sometimes I need some help keeping the home clean and with errands like trash/recycling and dishes.

As for me, I speak conversational Spanish and some French, and can read any Romance language. I work in International Finance and have traveled the world and I love meeting people from new places. I am friendly and get along well with people, though I do expect that work will be performed with a good work ethic. I ... more inside

*Accepting internship applications for May-September 2020.*

Unadilla Community Farm was founded in 2013 by a group of volunteers dedicated to the goals of the back-to-the-land movement. We are building an off-grid solar-powered homestead and education center following the principles of organic agriculture and permaculture design. We are situated on 12 acres of field and forest, alongside a growing Amish community in central New York State.

2020 is our 7th season welcoming interns. Our accredited internship program has attracted interns from North & South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand. Interns gain hands-on experience in no-till organic farming, regenerative agroforestry, permaculture, natural building, and food preservation. University students in the U.S. & Canada have earned course credits for our internship program (ask your advisor if you are eligible to earn credit too!).

Our internship is more than just a beginning farmer training program. It is an im... more inside
