I live in a conservation area close to the centre of Edinburgh, but with a reasonably green and peaceful outlook with views to Arthur's Seat and near Marchmont. Recently both house and garden maintenance have got somewhat beyond me and I'd really appreciate some help in getting things back on track and also some cheerful company.

It'd be great to have someone to stay who had decent carpentry, plumbing and other home maintenance skills to exchange time working together on tasks for accommodation (but not food). Gardening skills would also be very welcome as there is a lot that needs doing even although the garden is not large. The garden is organic, but currently mostly only yields rosemary, lavender, rocket, mint, gooseberries and chives!

Other random things that I would like to do and someone may have skills to help me with are repair and re-upholstery of old furniture and up-cycling/re-use of old materials and sustainable disposal of the same via channels like gumtre... more inside

News update - Coming up to Christmas we have a mixture of indoor and outdoor tasks depending on your skills. Indoors there will be woodworking, painting a floor and windows, moving furniture about; outdoors there's preparing the veg beds for next season, cutting hedges, collecting leaves. We also had a huge fruit harvest so now we're making lots of things from apples - preserves, juice, cider, and crisps!

Here's the bigger picture - we have a long term project renovating and extending a lovely 400 year old house and garden about half an hour north of Edinburgh. We like to work with the character and detail of the original building, using traditional materials and techniques where possible, so - for example - we have done repairs to lath and plaster in lime, and made our own shutters and panelling to match the originals. Outdoors we’re trying to grow our own fruit and veg, and make a beautiful garden in time! We would love some help with small building and finishing works, and tr... more inside

We have an outdoor challenge events business which organises cycling, walking, kayaking and swimming events raising money for charity. We operate from a farmhouse on the shores of Loch Tay in Highland Perthshire where we also have airbnb accommodation. Our business is very seasonal so we need short term help over the busy months. We are looking for willing helpers to join our friendly family team. Due to the nature of our business no two days are the same around here. Staying with us best suits flexible and self motivated individuals or couples who love wild open spaces and could help either with the business or the running of the house/garden. We have three children aged between 8 and 12 and two springer spaniels. Due to our remote location (no public transport and no shops within walking distance) staying with us will give you a true highland experience in a stunning part of Scotland and a taste of scottish rural life. This is the third season we have hosted helpx friends... more inside

We are a family run organic fruit and veg smallholding which is based in the Midlothians of Scotland just on the outskirts of edinburgh. We grow organic veg for our box delivery scheme and flowers which we sell at the weekly farmers market in Edinburgh. Help required would include weeding, quite a lot of that!, helping with the flowers, picking and possibly selling at the market, maybe some general maintenance.

This is a 5 acre walled garden. We have hens and goats and a ball crazy collie who loves to play.

We are looking for friendly people to help us, working 5 days a week, around 5 hours a day. Accommodation would be a caravan on our grounds, with self catering facilities. Food will be provided. There are regular buses from Dalkeith and Pathhead into Edinburgh. Please contact us if this sounds of interest to you.

At the moment we have space for 2 extra volunteers. Let us know if you are interested.

We are a friendly, ordinary family who moved to this beautiful remote village in Scotland some 9 years ago, to enjoy a better quality of life than we had in Stockport. We are currently building our house, a traditionally built, all masonry three storey property on a lovely plot of land overlooking the Sound of Mull. Unusually, our house is truly self-built, as we are carrying out all of the work ourselves and are not involving subcontractors apart from very specific items, for example, we brought in a subcontractor to excavate 2000 tons of rock from the site, where we have built our basement.
As there is a huge variety of different disciplines being employed in building the property, it is a fantastic opportunity for somebody to learn all about an enormous range of different construction techniques, and will include disciplines such as bricklaying, joinery, electrical work, plumbing, drainage and other skills.
We are offering the opportunity for someone to come and assist ... more inside

My girlfriend and I live in a village called Plockton which is by the sea in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. We have a big house and garden which is in need of a bit of looking after. As we are really busy with work at the moment we don't have time to do it all ourselves so we need some help! The jobs would be some painting and a bit of gardening.

This is a small farm on the sea loch of Loch Broom, next to the fishing village of Ullapool which is 6 miles further along the coast.

We have sheep and cattle (including highland cattle) plus there are areas of wildlife management. On the farm there are two rivers which flow into the broom estuary, which support salmon, sea trout, otters and sea birds.

The farmhouse is located at the head of Loch Broom. We are in the process of developing the farm towards organic certification and doing work to live up to Scottish Agricultural Department biodiversity requirements.

The farm is organised by Jane and worked by our one day a week farmer Brian, Johnny and helpers.

We garden vegetables in a large poly tunnel and aim to eat and provide organic and sustainable food from the farm and local area.

Typical work hours are about four or five hours a day.
Typical jobs are clearing brush and coppicing for land management, sheep husbandry and clipping, renovations of a cottage... more inside
