Looking for skilled/handy helpers from 20 Jan 2017

We (James - renewable energy engineer, Clare - jeweller and botanist, Neave (two year old, sleeper in training) and Mitzi (canine) - professional steak eater and wallaby chaser), bought 10 acres in Lenah Valley three years ago - which is 5km from the CBD of Hobart. Though it's very close to all amenities, it feels like our country house - completely away from the world! There's a donkey next door (Frank - who entertains us with his crazy noises), and wildlife galore!! You can have close encounters with pademelons, wallabies, possums, lots of small birds and native-hens!!!

Our aim in the near-term is to get the unit up to scratch (this is helpers accommodation - but we also hope to use it for AirBnb when it's smick), followed by projects outside where we plan to build an orchard, greenhouse and wicking garden beds. We have a sustainable lifestyle in mind, and most of our projects involve recycling timbers, using our beautiful n... more inside

I live in a great little 2 bedroom home in Hobart, with my dog Betty Boo. We are looking to share our space with people who are keen to trade my spare room for some hours in the garden and doing a few odd jobs. I never seem to have enough time to do what I need to do in the garden but I do have a spare room! I am also interested in meeting new people, making new friends and sharing my love of all things Tasmania.
The garden is currently a steep slopey weedy mess and I don't even really know what it will take to make it nice so I am hoping to host someone with a bit of garden know how and hopefully some basic building/ handyperson skills.
In return you can share my home, hang out with Betty Boo and have lots of time to get to know Hobart and Tasmania.
You will need to be fairly independent and self-sufficient. I can't offer meals (except on an ad hoc basis!) so I would only expect a couple of hours work a day.
My house is a 30 minute walk , or 5 minute drive, to the city centre b... more inside

We are a family of five; Jack and Hannah with 3 kids Jeanie, Flora and Otis. We run the market garden at the eco-village and are part of our food hub, which distributes our own vegetables, locally sourced fruit and organic wholefoods to the residents of the eco-village and the wider community. Tasks will mainly include general gardening and helping to upgrade our gardens. Please only apply if you have gardening experience and can commit to a minimum stay of two weeks. We generally only need help between October and March and can accommodate between 1 and 3 people. You will need to camp, so bring your own tent or ask us if you don't have one and we'll see what we can do! Living conditions are pretty basic on our block (no power/water) but these are available at the eco-village centre nearby (~100m). We expect around 4 hours of help, 5 days a week, in addition to some help with meal preparation etc. In turn we will provide you with 3 tasty mostly organic and home-grown meals a day.

I have a small farm in a beautiful valley in north west Tasmania, with a vibrant local community. The farm is a mix of bush and cleared areas, with beautiful forests of tall timber and rainforest.
At this stage I have a small flock of sheep and abundant local wildlife including wallabies, possums and many varieties of birds. I have a few bee hives which I work on regularly. I have a small vegetable garden (which is need of work!), numerous fruit trees and each year I grow a small crop of potatoes which are sold locally. Most of the work here involves building and maintaining fences, clearing weeds in paddocks, cutting, splitting and stacking firewood, gardening, working with fruit trees, building and caring for the animals.
I am currently building a new house using alternative construction techniques involving earthen walls and floors and a variety of locally sourced materials. The property will be of interest to anyone who values the principles of sustainable living. The far... more inside
