This is a magical place on the north coast of Orkney's West Mainland. We have rare woodland for a place so far north, rare sea birds, and otters in the river...
In the summer months we run this big old house as a Bed and Breakfast, it is very popular, we have guests from all over the world staying here and visiting the ancient stone circles and unique stone age sites on the Islands. We also host groups connecting with the mystical energy here. We sometimes host weddings. We had a wondeful season of helpers in 2016 and 2017. Thank you to everyone who applied! We welcome HelpX travellers willing to help out with the day to day running of the place and the maintenance of the grounds here. Thank you for your interest. We are generally open from April to October if you would like to apply for 2018.

Our hostel is on a working sheep farm in the Southern Scottish Highlands - quite remote but only 2 hours bus ride from Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are next to a loch -own ferry boat- and surrounded by mountains. The Hostel sleeps 12 people and there are also four quaint wooden huts ie there can be up to a maximum of 30 beds to be made each day. Very busy in July and August when there will be a team of 6 volunteers. Volunteer accomodation is in two caravans - the largest adjacent to the Hostel. Prefer applicants with skills/some experience - either in house-keeping, maintenance or outdoor work. Also ideal for language students who need a certificate of work abroad for their course qualifications. Erasmus Work grant possible if university support.

We own a large old house near Newton Stewart, with semi-natural woodland and a large garden, which we are trying to improve all the time. Work includes helping us to eradicate rhododendron ponticum, a non-native invasive shrub growing in the woodland, which involves cutting and pulling out bushes, thus allowing native trees to grow, this is best done in winter; also some garden work, painting, tree planting and making bread. We are particularly interested in garden design, plant ecology and environmental issues, our garden has been featured in several magazines. We grow our own vegetables, eat our own meat, and do a lot of home-cooking. Accommodation is offered in our house, with your own bedroom and bathroom, eating meals with us. We like to eat well, with plenty of vegetarian food (and meat). We have wi-fi .

Mark and I have been converting the site into a conservation breeding collection of threatened and endangered birds. Our focus will be to work with threatened wildfowl, high altitude pheasants, flamingos, grouse (native species like capercaillie and ptarmigan) and parrots.

In the last three years we have started our collection which is currently about three hundred birds (emu, rhea, swans, geese, ducks and an array of rare breed chickens and ducks). We have built pens and dug lakes. We've planted hundreds of trees, orchards, hedging and mixed woodlands which will provide wind protection and food for grouse.

We have a great caravan which has two double beds / tables. It would be ideal for a couple w... more inside

Experience the beautiful and wild off grid and off road Scoraig. You can stay in my lovely brand new yurt, use my kitchen and washing facilities and compost loo. I only ask for 2.5 hours hep a day and in return you get a free stay in the yurt but not food. So you will get plenty of time off. I need someone who can build a pathway out of slabs. It may take about two weeks. Only contact me if you can do this as I don't need other types of help. I would prefer a single woman or a couple.

There is no road here and no amenities so will have to be able entertain yourself and be happy relaxing or reading for example. It would suit someone who loves being in nature and or is interested in alternative lifestyle. There are a couple of other volunteers on the peninsula at other households.

Please be aware there is no road here. You must walk in on a track for an hour. It is very remote here!
