My husband Ricky and I live on a 3000 acre cattle farm about an hour south of Mackay and three hours north of Rockhampton. We live in a comfortable renovated shed/house with our little mini foxy "Missy" (and at the moment an orphaned baby lamb "Friday"). We have five cattle working dogs, lots of chooks (for eggs), we grow our own meat chickens, quail, and sheep. Our aim is for self sufficiency. Ricky musters the cattle three to four times a year and if you're lucky enough to be here at mustering time, you can get a taste of life on a real Aussie Cattle Farm. In the cooler months we have extensive veggie and herb gardens and a small orchard. We have a lovely creek flowing through the property where we enjoy cooling off while floating on a tyre tube. We acknowledge the importance of soil health and make our own soil conditioner that we call "bio-fertiliser". There are some local fishing spots, Cape Palmerston National Park is also nearby, many species of birds to watch, a hamm... more inside

We welcome you to our peaceful, friendly home in the Somerset Region. We enjoy hosting with HelpX & have had made lovely friends from all over the world. It has made such a difference to me to have extra hands to help & all our guests have left wonderful reviews about their experience staying with us. They have enjoyed the good food & language practice as well as seeing the real Australia. I have a decorative garden, food garden and chickens and I have really appreciated some help in exchange for filling, healthy meals and comfortable, private lodging. The work involves light gardening, (weeding, pruning, planting and watering) on a daily basis for about 5 hours (negotiable) in exchange for meals, lodging and internet. Suitable applicants would need to be able to share-house with respectful consideration for others and not smoke or drink in or around the property. We are a couple in our early 60's (Katy and John) who live on a rural coastal property at Guthalungra, North Queensland. Our property boarders the Elliot River and has views of nearby Cape Upstart and the Coral Sea. We earn our income breeding cattle and growing mangoes. Katy works 4 days per work in Ayr and John works full time on the property.

We try to be as self sustaining as possible by growing our own vegetables and fruit, our beef is grown on the property and our fish, prawns and mud crab we catch in the nearby Elliot river and Coral Sea. We have free range chickens to provide eggs and pigs for our ham and bacon. During March to September we grown a variety of vegetables for the household, where we can teach our helpers how to grow produce is our dry, hot climate. They learn how to prepare the soil, to pot and plant seedings, how to weed around the plants, pick, dry and freeze the produce and how to make sun-dried tomatoes, jams, cakes, desserts, relish, pickles, chutney,... more inside
