I run an Art Gallery and Studio in the semi tropical rainforest in Antigua. I need help in the day to day running of the Art Gallery, I also need help in the studio with printmaking and preparation of art work, framing etc. There will be some cleaning and general maintenance. I grow tropical flowers such as heliconias and gingerlillies which I sell to hotels. One of your jobs would be to pick flowers. You would have your own room and bathroom and would eat with us at mealtimes, I would prefer somebody over the age of 25 and it would be great if you have a driving licence so that you can help with picking up my 12 year old son from school. We are 15 minutes from a beautiful beach and we eat healthy wholesome food. We are looking for a friendly outgoing adaptable person preferably with an interest in art. You would receive training and would learn a lot. I would be very grateful for some help in January, February, March and April 2019.

HURRICANE MARIA UPDATE:

Our site unfortunately suffered severe damage during the passing of Category 5 Hurricane Maria on the night of September 18th 2017. All 5 wooden structures including 2 homes, 2 guesthouse cabins and our school space were totally destroyed and the Family Tree community project has been put on hold. We lost absolutely everything from our floorboards to our solar panels including our fridge, oven, furniture, mattresses, kids toys, clothes and, most heart-breakingly, all our books and 90% of our tree and garden crops.

WHAT WE DO STILL HAVE!!
- Natural spring water source
- Double vault compost toilet (minus the walls and roof.... for now!)
- Tool shed with temporary roof - and most tools still operational
- A bunch of scrap lumber
- Seeds and the means to harvest some basic organic produce
- Herbaceous plants
- Our cow and her young calf (conceived within days of the storm...), 3 dogs and 2 cats :-)
- A fiercely motivated energy to restore our piece... more inside

Our permaculture farm is a 5 acres farmstay only 10 minutes drive from Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We grow organic vegetables and fruits, raise chickens for egg production and have few rabbits to help us produce vermi-compost. We are now in the process of developing an agro-tourism project and would need the following:

Someone knowledgeable or interested in learning about permaculture to work with us on the implementation of a community project involving the area of Fern Gully. The tasks will include demonstration and teaching of permaculture techniques with the use of chicken tractors, vermicompost, rabbit, goat husbandry, use of cover crops, composting and production of bio-fertilizers, home made pesticides etc..So you will be learning and teaching at the same time while you practice.

I am a retired farmer from Michigan now living in Jamaica. We have a villa and camping area that always needs some tender loving care. In the gardens and or yard with the goats or painting whatever the project is extra hands are helpful. We provide a tent for sleeping and expect 3 hours work in the morning hours. There is a shower and outdoor bathroom on property. Also 2 small groceries shops and a cook shop or 2 for local foods in the town. Town is a 10 minute walk from the backpackers hostel and lots of roads to hike in the countryside.

ROOTS FARM, DOMINICA, WORK EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY

Not certified but using organic standards, on Sept. 17, 2017, Roots Farm was growing diverse fruits, roots, vegetables and herbs at two lovely mountainside locations in Cochrane, Dominica for predominantly retail sales within Dominica. After a decade and a half of investment --mostly 80 hour weeks and all of our savings -- and despite severe setbacks from 2015 TS Erica landslides, the farmís future finally looked bright and right around the corner. The fruit trees were poised for their first commercially successful year (avocados in Oct., citrus Nov-March, cocoa, soursop, sugar apple, mangosteen, pineapples and many more varieties at their respective natural times throughout the year. Large plantings of root crops (yams, dasheen, tannias) looked good for Dec-Feb. harvest and sales. Vegetables and herbs were still in the ground, but were to be phased out in favor of the incoming fruit and root crops.

Then, Sept. 18, 2017, Category... more inside

An old estate damaged by Hurricane Maria, currently under repair. A huge property that has very overgrown gardens, also damaged extensively. Previously a multi-generational residence, now home to 'man of the house' while others take shelter off island :(
He could use help but is almost to busy to direct, so ideally helpers would be independent & adventurous who don't mind finding their way and roughing it!
