Nieu Bethesda is a very small village in the Karoo region of South Africa. We are situated in the Sneeuberg Mountains and experience very hot summers and very cold winters. Mid winter below freezing at night and snow is not uncommon. It is a tourist town populated largely by artists and people wishing to get away from the city. Business is very seasonal with most visitors coming during school holidays, long weekends etc. although there will always be somebody moving through each day. The main tourist attraction is a national monument called the Owl House which is an outsider artwork created by a lady who spent most of her life here. She died almost 40 years ago. You can Google images for the Owl House to see what its all about. A lot of people come to Nieu Bethesda year after year to simply experience its uniqueness and the inspiration it evokes in people when visiting. People will often come for extended stays in pursuit of creative activities such as painting, writing etc. The ... more inside

Our 100ha farm is situated in the semi arid Little Karoo in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
Our dream is to create a retreat for artists and nature lovers on a permaculture and organic small holding. Life on the farm is all about doing things differently and looking after nature and each other.
Our passions include reducing consumption and encouraging personal autonomy and happiness. We expect our volunteers to share some of these passions and to join in with our lively conversations around the dinner table or whilst working.
We have a flock of about 40 chickens that roam freely and are kept for meat and eggs. We grow our own organic vegetables and are developing the gardens along permaculture concepts.
We are also in the process of developing the retreat which involves building and clearing work.
Volunteers must be ok with the remoteness of the farm and be willing to work alone at times. Vegans and couples/friends are very welcome!
The work day is roughly between ... more inside

Its been at least two years now that I have been trying to buy this farm. Its a 10 Hectare property near Coleen Glen about 20km from Port Elizabeth. The land is on the base of a south facing hill. The remaining part of the original farm from which other parts have been subdivided over the years. Parts of the house are really old. The farm was first granted to a Mr Kok in 1816. He may have built this house shortly after that. I am still doing some research to find out with certainty.

The farm has some pasture some forest and some wet land. There are two springs and a stream running though the property. The two streams I believe feed the Kragga Kamma river after which the area is named.

My intention is to restore the farm into a mixed farm with indigenous Nguni cattle, boerbok goats and local sheep breeds. I intend to manage the forest and perhaps run a small free range pork operation. I have some experience with pastured poultry. the farm will definitely be suited to this.
