My Mom moved in with me when my Dad passed away mid June 2013. She is 82 with Alzheimerís but is happy and entertaining. For the past number of years she received little stimulation and retreated further into her mind. Since June she has improved a lot from the constant love and companionship but I am unable to spend as much time with her as she needs.

We live in a small town an hour from Johannesburg in a large, comfortable home with two old dogs and lots of books. My Mom was a voracious reader and is very intelligent and wise. Some of what she says doesnít make much sense because she explains herself in riddles with a cryptic angle. She can, however, be very funny and very sharp.

She is mostly smiling and singing but she does have Alzheimerís so her short term memory is bad and she often repeats herself. She doesnít need any nursing but canít do many tasks like make coffee. She loves to have poetry read to her and going for a drive. She always loved to travel and would pro... more inside

Help 1000's of Animals with us in South Africa!

Furkidz is a registered non-profit organisation with the mission to help South Africa's thousands of shelter animals. We are looking for animal loving volunteers to join us!

Our website www.Furkidz.co.za provides an easily searchable, comprehensive database of rescue pets available for adoption.

We have chosen the medium of the internet in order to reach thousands of South African pet lovers instantly, and have created a cyber shelter visiting experience that is so fun and compelling that visitors fanatically search until their new pet has been found.

About 5000 animals from almost 60 shelters are featured on our website and we update the website every day. We write articles, post interesting news and physically visit the shelters, take pictures of their cats and dogs, edit the pictures, upload them to the FurKidz website and monitor their adoption progress.

Regular newsletters are sent out and FurKidz hosts and suppo... more inside

Nieu Bethesda is a very small village in the Karoo region of South Africa. We are situated in the Sneeuberg Mountains and experience very hot summers and very cold winters. Mid winter below freezing at night and snow is not uncommon. It is a tourist town populated largely by artists and people wishing to get away from the city. Business is very seasonal with most visitors coming during school holidays, long weekends etc. although there will always be somebody moving through each day. The main tourist attraction is a national monument called the Owl House which is an outsider artwork created by a lady who spent most of her life here. She died almost 40 years ago. You can Google images for the Owl House to see what its all about. A lot of people come to Nieu Bethesda year after year to simply experience its uniqueness and the inspiration it evokes in people when visiting. People will often come for extended stays in pursuit of creative activities such as painting, writing etc. The ... more inside

Our 100ha farm is situated in the semi arid Little Karoo in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
Our dream is to create a retreat for artists and nature lovers on a permaculture and organic small holding. Life on the farm is all about doing things differently and looking after nature and each other.
Our passions include reducing consumption and encouraging personal autonomy and happiness. We expect our volunteers to share some of these passions and to join in with our lively conversations around the dinner table or whilst working.
We have a flock of about 40 chickens that roam freely and are kept for meat and eggs. We grow our own organic vegetables and are developing the gardens along permaculture concepts.
We are also in the process of developing the retreat which involves building and clearing work.
Volunteers must be ok with the remoteness of the farm and be willing to work alone at times. Vegans and couples/friends are very welcome!
The work day is roughly between ... more inside

Hi, I am living in Sodwana bay, which is on the very Northern side of K.Z.N. We are part of a marine sanctuary The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park which sports a huge birdlife and have one of the top 5 dive sites in the world. We have four neighbouring game reserves, of which three of them have the Big 5.
( Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, Rhino and Cheetah). The reserves being Hluhluwe, umfolozi,97km and 121km from us and Mkuze 50km and False bay park approximately 70km. We also have Lake Sibaya, which is regularly visited by locals and is about 20km from the main town. The beach is about 8 km from the guest house. Mbazwane is the main shopping place here and is 9km away. There are regular taxi rides up to Mbazwane or down to the beach. Fares range between R7 to R10. Sodwana town has quite a few local restaurants, a pizza hut a coffee shop as well as a few pubs. There is a nursery and two local artists in town as well as a few wood crafters and some local ladies who sell curios. We are app... more inside
