Our family has been in the Carolina low-country since the 1670s, and here on this property since 1827. The farm and family have seen many changes throughout the centuries, and is looking to the future!

An experimental and educational farm/homestead, we are working to bring a high level of self-sufficiency/sustainability here and to share our knowledge with our visitors.

This is the farm's 9th year hosting visitors. Forty-six countries represented and over 375 guests staying, all have helped make the farm a better place. They have laughed, learned, sweated, plus they have help grow and have eaten some great food. We hope all that spend time here will take something positive away with them. Looking forward to another year of great helpers and guests!

***Looking for farm help with horses, 1 month minimum stay***

We work closely with a not for profit horse rescue farm, in Western North Carolina. We are looking for help with general farm maintenance, and upkeep. Duties will include grass cutting, weed eating, basic landscaping, fence repair, along with some horse care. Anyone here must love animals, be a non-smoker, a non-drug user and be very easy going. We are about 30 minutes from downtown Asheville and transportation is a must. Accommodations are an apartment with private bath, laundry, a mini kitchen and separate entrance. We would expect a HelpXer to work 20 hours a week independently and provide and prepare their own food. Hendersonville and the surrounding areas have wonderful places to explore. Pets are not an option as we have plenty already!

We have now hosted HelpXers for several years and love meeting folks from all over the world! We are a small farm and are considered an agri-tourism destination as we have a "Healing Spring" on the property. Discovered in 1883 the water from the spring has many curative powers. The spring is available for free to anyone who wants to come and get the water.

We are near many great hiking destinations, Mt. Rogers, Grayson Highlands State Park, Stone Mountain, Doughton Park and the many trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway that crosses through our part of the state of North Carolina. We are just off of the New River with fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Additionally, the Virginia Creeper Trail, Rocky Knob Park and the Railroad Grade trail offer great biking opportunities. We are 10 minutes from the town of West Jefferson with a great Farmers Market and cute town with artisan shops. We are just a short driving distance several larger cities.

We will be looking for help again starting April 2020.

Small homestead farm in the Appalachian Mountains striving for a "greener" existence here by growing our own organic vegetables, eggs and chicken. We are developing orchards, berry patches and pasture land. There are 3 children, 2 dogs, a cat, a bunch of chickens, lots of deer and wild turkey, a fox and occasionally a bear. We provide a large room w private bath. Other "ammenities" include a small swimming pool, trampoline, bikes, and now a zip line!

We have hosted 84 travelers during the last 12 years through the WWOOF program and more recently through HelpX. Long term stays are preferred, but will make exceptions for international travelers. Our rules here are simple; Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be respectful. Also, no tobacco or drug use!!

We are 25 minutes from Asheville, North Carolina, which is a great town. Lots of good restaurants, almost 2 dozen breweries, tons of festivals, great bluegrass music and lots of ar... more inside

Please note this is a healing place and is an alcohol, drug and tobacco-free environment. Please don't apply if you can't honor our policies. Fine to go out for a beer or glass of wine or on special occasions here. This is a school for sustainable living, a working farm, and homestead. It is located in the Nantahala Mountains on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 10 miles south of the town of Franklin, North Carolina (120 miles N.E. of Atlanta, GA and 70 miles west of Asheville, NC). The center's 32 acres lie in the heart of a small valley with a stream fed by numerous springs and surrounded by national forest. The stream provides water for an off-grid hydro-electric system. The area is home to wild turkey, deer, bear, and has one of the largest diversities of plants anywhere in the world. Huge chestnut stumps, remains of 1800 log cabins, mill raceways, spring houses, century-old farming roads, and old still sites, are reminders of a people and a way of life based on an... more inside

About Our Farm

The Farm: Our farm is entirely off grid (some cellphone signal with verizon), self-sustaining for energy, water, and at times food. The mission is to take this valley from a raw deforested state of past abuses to a balanced and fully closed loop system. Currently we sit in a vast and open space with loads of pasture along with amazing views. Mountainous topography (well nc mountains) at a comfortable 3,500 feet above sea level. Approximately 75% is pasture which is managed using a rotationally grazing system with Scottish highland cattle, donkeys pals, and 8 dairy goats. Other animals/friends are 3 horses, 25 chickens and 12 Guinea fowl and 5 ducks. The springs here are popping out of the landscape creating a creek in the bottom down into the woods, which is a beautiful refreshing escape outside the open pastures.

Who we are: Jonny and Kalin Allen.

Jonny has been working our farm for the past 5 years listening and observing the landscape. He has taken the ... more inside

We are private quiet horse farm with 2 horses chickens, a couple of cats and a small kitchen garden. There is a fishing pond, lots of wooded trails and mountains for hiking. The farm is about a 15-minute drive from down town Asheville, NC. Asheville is a desirable town with excellent food, music, culture, and an active outdoor community. The area is well known for adventure sports like great mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paddling, etc.

We typically look for one or two folks to helpx , for 1-2 week stays. We are looking for independent workers that can help with summer garden chores, weeding, yard work, etc., plus daily routines like feeding chickens. We have a few things that are horse related, mainly morning and evening feeding along with basic barn chores, and occasional reloading the loft with hay. But the majority of projects are non-horse related. We have inside projects when weather dictates.

This is a non profit Shamanic Center that offers community ceremony and monthly purification (sweat)lodges. We are located in the NW corner of North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country is a tourist destination near the Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, canoeing, and incredible hiking opportunities. West Jefferson is a 20 minute drive for grocery shopping and is a unique quaint small town. Boone (50 minute drive)a wonderful college town voted one of the top 10 place to live in the US, has great entertainment and shopping. There is very limited public transportation in this rural area so rides may not always be easy to come by.

Our mission is to provide a space for healing for seekers that desire to be a balanced human and contribute to raising the collective conscious on Grandmother Earth. We teach self responsibility and that life is about choices and that your life is about the choices you make.

The lodge also is an AirBnB host with 12 beds and 6 priv... more inside
