Helper Description:
I am very enthusiastic and helpful. I am excited to be in a place where I can learn and expand my knowledge on hispanic culture! I am available from July to the beginning of August and I am from the United States. My main goals are to learn spanish, make a friend, amd immerse myself in the culture. I am not very skilled in speaking Spanish, but I am a fast learner and would not be surprised if by the end of my stay I was speaking pretty fluently. On a scale from 1-10 I would say my Spanish skills are about a 5, because I understand a lot of Spanish and can string words together to make a sentence but I am not skilled enough to create a response in Spanish. I am very motivated and always look to help people. A project that I am very proud of is my Hope Youth Corp trip. I went to Florida over Christmas of last year to help foster kids and homeless people. My parents and Grandmother paid for the trip for my Christmas gift. I take great pride in it because I did organize and find where I wanted to go and why I wanted to go, and got through everything I needed to in order to travel by myself. I was one of the youngest people there and felt like a made great impact on everyone I met with and helped. I was there for 10 days and took part in multiple events. In a day we dug a pathway for a road in a remote area, another day, on Christmas, we fed a group of about 500 homeless people, and all of the other days I was with the foster kids and did multiple things with them and for them. I got a lot out of that trip because I was working all day and up early every morning doing what I love to do, helping people. I also made a lot of great friends who I am still in touch with! I have had three jobs in the past. I started working as soon as I possibly could in a concession stand at the of age twelve until I was about 14. Then right when I turned 16 I worked at a child resale store for about a year and a half. In that job I was there from the very beginning and helped get the store up and running, because I was a new store to where I live. In the summer I was going through potential store product and then I would price the item accordingly. There was also a lot of other tasks that I would do such as tagging, hanging clothes, organizing the floor, sweeping, cleaning and other janitorial duties, and opening the store and closing down the store. The last job that I had I was working as a host at a restaurant. That job taught me a lot about my work ethic. I really love fast paced work where I am around and helping a lot of people. I am very good at working with people and love to be in a environment where that is my task at hand most of the time. My responsibility at the restaurant was to be a friendly face for guests to talk to, ask questions, and if they need any directory I would be the person they would go to, and of course seating people. My main goal in life is to be a bilingual traveling nurse. One of my biggest personal goals I am hoping to achieve from this experience is to learn Spanish and be immersed and basically forced to learn the language. It has been a goal of mine to go to an immersion program in Mexico since I was in ninth grade. Now that I am older I am looking for more of an independent time traveling and a work exchange program is perfect for the experience I am looking for. The work exchange program will extremely benefit me and prepare me for my future. I have never been outside of the US before and I know that I need to experience other countries who do not have the same privilege as the US does in order to know how to help. As well as taking away the culture and language aspects of the trip. I am very excited to learn as much as I possibly can. Some things that I feel are important to know about me is that I am a learner, so typically in my spare time I am often trying to learn something new. I am also a interactive learner and it is how I learn best. Reading and journaling are a couple of my hobbies. I like poetry, books about movements, nonfiction books, and novels. Another hobby that I have recently taken up is photography. So whereve I go I am hoping to get some great pictures! I consider physical activity a neccesity for my daily life and am hoping for wherever I go to be somewhere that I will be able to integrate exercise in my daily routine. I am CPR certified. Some things that excite me about traveling would be the independence. I am a very independent person and I like to make my day according to what I need to do and then plan other experiences throughout the rest of my day or week. I am also very excited to meet new people and learn the Hispanic culture and daily lifestyle in Costa Rica. I am a very outgoing person and I love to try new things and I am very excited to try everything I possibly can when I am there and get as many experiences as I can as well. Something that I am nervous about is not finding someone to enjoy the adventures with while I am there. I don't like to try new things by myself all the time so I am just nervous that if I can not find someone to do stuff with I just won't do as much as I would like to. I am very comfortable meeting new people as well. I am one of those people that I can make friends wherever I go and maintain those friendships! I do like to have some solo time but I am definitely very social as well. I would say that I can be both detail oriented and a big picture person. I like my work to be as close to perfection as possible. I ask a lot of questions when assigned a task so that I can make sure that I am perfectly clear with everything I am doing or whatever it is I need to know, and I feel like that makes me pretty detail oriented. I think that when it comes to me I am detail oriented but when it is certain things that I know that no matter what I can not change it or make it perfect, I will look at it like one big picture. Thank you!
