Summer here is beautiful — the sea is never far away and there are plenty of opportunities to swim and enjoy the island — but we are first and foremost a **working farm**, and summer is one of our busiest times of the year. We grow around 10–15 different vegetables and herbs, as well as some fruit. After selling our farm we have moved to a beautiful 40 acre block on the boundary of Mount Aspiring National Park. Makarora is a small settlement, 60km north of Wanaka, on the way to Haast and the West Coast. Helper tasks include help maintaining the surrounding native bush, care of the chooks, ducks, dogs and house cows. I need a Helper to be motivated, willing to take a turn with the cooking and other household chores. We grow organic table grapes, a few fruit trees, chickens and a few pigs. This is a real farm experience, mostly working in the vineyard, with some fun too. There is biking to town, swimming in the ocean or our lake, fishing, basketball, volleyball, hiking, nature walks, beach strolling and look for fossils at Blue Beach, camp fires , rope swing in our little lake, take in the fantastic views, sunsets, star gazing, internet, phone and go to nearby towns such as Wolfville and Hantsport as well as the rest of the Annapolis Valley with the local bus. Gardening, housework, light mechanical, a bit of hunting, all sorts of things, never boring.A wicked sense of humor is a good asset to bring. handy to Routeburn and Greenstone tracks. You will need your own internet connection as I don't supply wifi. A bit isolated, not for the precious, no trophy hunters!! Please don't apply unless you intend to come for a minimum stay of two weeks. One person only. We do not get involved with internships or visa applications. Vegetarians and vegans would probably not be comfortable as we eat meat daily. I am off grid and totally dependent on solar, so you have to charge your devices during the day and definitely no hairdryers! Accommodation is a house bus in warmer weather or a room in the house in winter, not shared usually. I live in an old farm and farmhouse in Normandy. I have converted a cottage into a holiday cottage with 4 bedrooms (all en suite) and one barn into another. I also had a Yurt (now gone but the pictures are still there !!) and a campsite. With the guest-accommodation, farm and further buildings to be converted, I could always do with an extra pair of hands. Skills can range from building, painting, cleaning, farming and general maintenance. Someone with a sense of humour would be great. The property is an 11 acre lifestyle block, with Gardens/food forest, Grazing and Native bush just outside of Matakana, an hour north of Auckland. Currently doing renovations so - you would need to be ok with that. We are looking for a single female, female friends or a couple (we are unable to accommodate single males sorry) to join our family and help out with a mix of developing edible garden systems based on permaculture principles, weeding, feeding pet sheep, planting, household chores and community projects ( we love sharing our local communities, local people and events with guests).
